Ppl being turned into animals as punishment was prophesised by the Messenger.
Narrated Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari:
that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection."
Though this particular lizard case may be false i believe we shouldn't dismiss everything as a hoax or believe in everything immediatly without verifying it.
If a liar (fasiq) comes to you with any news, verify it, lest you smite some people in ignorance and afterwards repent of what you did.” (Al-hujurat 49:6)
There are other cases of rocks and trees speaking, a beast coming out of the earth etc. etc in islamic eschatology which are not easily explained by today's science. Muslims believe in an All-Powerful God and the possiblity of miracles and fantastic feats combined with a love for an stigmatised and oppressed religion make some ppl believe in such stories too quickly without verification.
