General's spokesman
President Pervez Musharraf will stand down as head of the Pakistani army on Wednesday, his spokesman Rashid Qureshi has told the BBC.
The spokesman told the BBC President Musharraf would then be sworn in for another term in office on Thursday.

President Musharraf has been under intense international and domestic pressure to give up his military role.

good news (in my view - i'm sure some will disagree).

Military seize Swat peak, shut radio

PESHAWAR: Security forces have captured a strategic mountain from militants in the Swat valley and shut down the radio station of Maulana Fazlullah.

According to foreign news agency, the provincial government said security forces had secured more towns and seized Najia Top, the highest peak in a district that has been a stronghold of cleric Maulana Fazlullah.

Residents and state television said Fazlullah's pirate radio station, from which he preaches holy war against the government, had also been shut down.

"The area between Kanju and Najia Top has been successfully secured," the provincial government said in a statement.

Government forces have stepped up their offensive in the area in the past few days, using artillery and helicopter gunships to drive the insurgents out of their mountain strongholds.

An administration official, Tariq Salim, blamed health ministry officials for “mishandling” the situation, adding “this would not have happened had they consulted us before starting the distribution directly to the women.”—AFP
This is happening when the authorities are not discussing the things before to start such an action.

I am not very content about the radio station because in democracy everyone should be free to express his view, the people having the option to choose between alternatives.

What does Democracy have to do with Pakistan?

It seams that in Pakistan many have no problem with killing you for expressing a view that is not theres.

And Snake, I agree with you.
As corrupt as the government is, IMHO it is far better that having many militant groups set up there own little area governemnt by violance.

I can hardly believe it. I didn't think he would. Now what happenes if he looses the election?

Girls’ school building destroyed
PESHAWAR, Nov 26: A powerful bomb exploded in the Government Girls Primary School in the village of Sher Bahadur near here on Monday morning, destroying the main gate, windows, doors and boundary wall of the school.

The school administration is reported to have received anonymous letters a few days ago, with a threat if its students did not observe purdah, the building of the school would be destroyed.

Police officials told Dawn they had increased patrolling and tightened security, particularly in areas where terrorists and extremists had intensified their activities.

Will I think most plans there change at least once every 24 hours. But now this one is real.

But then, what is there to stop him from taking it back?

no, i think he's really quitting the army. but apparently he is now president and the elections only have to do with parliament and prime minister.
actually, the line between "democratic" governments and military dictatorships in pakistan is not that sharp.

Is this Sexophobia or what?

Mannequins removed after threats
PESHAWAR, Nov 27: Owners of garment shops in Peshawar have either removed the mannequins used for displaying dresses or covered them with clothes after receiving threatening letters from militants.

A meeting of the shopkeepers’ association of Karimpura, held here on Tuesday to discuss the militants’ threat, decided to remove the mannequins altogether or fully cover them.

The meeting was informed that 10 militants visited the Shaheen Bazaar, a market for women, and asked the shopkeepers to remove mannequins which, they said, promoted obscenity. The letter sent by the militants warned them of dire consequences, if they did not carry out the instruction.

this thread is woefully lacking in pakistani participation. maybe because the issues are so emotional that arguing usually breaks out.
but i wish a pakistani would tell me
what are the powers of the president?
what are the powers of the prime minister?
which one is more powerful?
or is all this stuff up in the air, since, at the moment there is no constitution?
thanks in advance.

because this site and the whole web is overpopulated by pretenders who are intrested in destruction of pakistan and glorification of hindu agents masquerading as mullahs and students
but i wish a pakistani would tell me
what are the powers of the president?

what are the powers of the prime minister?

thanks noname.
so the PM will be more powerful than president musharraf. personally, i would rather see musharraf in the more powerful seat than either of the 2 likely PM's. i think he has made mistakes, but is still better for pakistan than either bhutto or sharif - what do you think? something about recycling leaders who looted the country is just pathetic.
as for hindus masquerading as mullahs....well, that's beyond me. however, i must say that i found the targeting of the chinese by the mullah minions a bit strange. why would a religious movement want to drive a wedge between pakistan and china?

to please their masters across the border and overseas too (who want to sabotage many if not all joint projects underway in pakistan)

you may well be right - after all, i think china has been pakistan's only consistent ally.
do you have any preference between bhutto and sharif - or do they both have the same stench?
