Hint #1: The first line refers to its shape.
Hint #2: What could be said to "hunt" in the water but which never eats?

An anchor?

It kind of looks like a smile. It sinks, but doesn't drown. It 'hunts' for earth so that it can hold the boat in one place. But it doesn't have barbed teeth. Hmm...
