Re: Tagrid's riddles thread!

Wow, this thread has gotten very long.

I'll introduce a problem for now. Some of you may already know it.

Take a look at the pattern below:
sierpdetGIF-1.gif

I won't mention the name of this pattern, because I don't want people cheating on this problem. :D

Now, for each triangle in the pattern, determine the area that is white. i.e. the first is zero, the second is 1/4,....

If you can do that, give me a formula to calculate the white area of the nth triangle.

Re: Tagrid's riddles thread!

i think riddles are cool but i can never understand them so i try my best to stay away from it but its interesting to read it and see the actual answer so ppl who can actually do it masha'Allah thats cool

Re: Tagrid's riddles thread!

:sl:

Been trying to work out Ansar's question but I'm quite exhausted now after almost having my head exploded. I am VERY near to the answer I think...I just can't find a way to relate the patterns to the value of 'n'.

The least I can do is to tell the areas then:
1st Triangle = 0
2nd = 1/4
3rd = 7/16
4th = 37/64

If that isn't right I think I'll jump out of a window.

Re: Tagrid's riddles thread!

Yes, its right, Br. Muhammad. I think I made a mistake in the question about the formula. Two corrections:
-the first triangle is the one with area of 1/4
-derive a formula to find the white area of the next triangle (not needed to relate it to n, only to the area of the previous triangle)

Re: Tagrid's riddles thread!

No, the first number in the series should be 1/4, not zero. But either way, since we're asking for a recursive formula, it shouldn't make a difference.

Well done for trying Br zAK although I have no idea whether its right or not since my brain is switched off.

Re: Tagrid's riddles thread!

Assalamu'Alaykum

Re: Tagrid's riddles thread!

I'm back..........got only one more exam to go and that is the english writing paper.

OK now lets see........

Re: Tagrid's riddles thread!

:sl: Sorry for the delayed response.

Lets assume Number of White Blocks in the triangle be "X"
n total Number of Blocks be "Y"

so the for the first triangle its :
X/Y = 1/4

now to get the number for the next triangle i got the forumla :

[3x+y]/4y
So you're saying that
n=3x+y
........... 4y

where x is the numerator of the previous term, and y is the denominator. Interesting way to tackle the problem.

I'll show how I did it.

If you look at the pattern, you notice right away that the denominator in each term increases by multiples of 4. So I said for the nth term, the denominator is 4^n.

My formula was:

tn= (3^n-1) + tn-1
..............4^n

Where tn is the nth term, and tn-1 is the previous term. :)

Great job, br. Zak! :D
