As-Salaam alaikum,
To embark and benefit from Zuhd, or renunciation to the world, whereby detaches himself of material and worldly pleasures to devote oneself to spiritual life and pursuit of Divine Truth, one (we) must initially realize that it is a choice we make to live for what is permanent, for the love of Allah Ta'ala.
This detachment isn't an ascape from the world, but a refusal to be distracted by what distracts from Allah's path. Zuhd invites us to purify our hearts of anything other than Allah, to seek simplicity and sincerity in our intentions and actions.
Zikr, Prayer and meditation are tools and/or methods for maintaining Zuhd, an act or way of life that teaches to be satisfied with little, to find joy in simplicity and live every moment with gratitude, knowing that everything we receive is a gift from Allah, the Kind and Generous Lord of the Cosmos.
