Hi,

What is Islam's views on oppression?

There are countless people being oppressed all over the world. Think of the people of Palestine being oppressed by the Jews. Think of the people of Syria being oppressed by Assad and the other crazy people. Think of the people of Indian being oppressed by Hindus. Think of the people of Rohingya being oppressed by Buddhists. There are also loads of other people who are being oppressed who are not coming to my mind at the moment.

Also, there are other faith groups who are also being oppressed by other faith groups or even the same ones.

Why do the transgressors always get away with it? Do you ever wonder why Allah does not strike them down? When I have spoken to my friends, most of whom are atheist now, they have pointed out that there cannot be a God, otherwise he must like children being tortured and burned, women being raped, people being killed for no reason whatsoever etc.

Please do share your thoughts.

Can't say really, imo its just another straw in a haystack.

If someone comes to oppress you it has very little effect if you are not already in a cycle of dependence and compulsion.

Secondly it has very little effect if you have nothing to lose.

Lastly it has very little effect if you oppose and win in the first instance.

It's the same as sinning I suppose, the way we live either strengthens or weakens our position.. In the eyes of others.

But ultimately there should be no compulsion in religion.

...for instance iv worked for a long and time and only ever made ends meet.

Iv done menial work and labour and yet hold a degree and experience in the profession.

I met a young man who said he really needed the work and yet would not do the menial tasks I set him.

I still do them myself and could not in good conscience keep him on.

...it is a paradox.

Ultimately I am not yet sure if he was right or I was.

Quran 8:51 English translations

Arabic: ذَٰلِكَ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ لَيْسَ بِظَلَّامٍ لِلْعَبِيدِ
Sherali: `This torment is because of that which your hands have sent on before and know that ALLAH is not at all unjust to HIS servants.'
Khan: This is because of that which your hands had forwarded. And verily, Allah is not unjust to His slaves.
Pickthal: This is for that which your own hands have sent before (to the Judgment), and (know) that Allah is not a tyrant to His slaves.
Rashad: This is a consequence of what your hands have sent forth. GOD is never unjust towards the creatures.
Maulana: This is for that which your own hands have sent on before, and because Allah is not in the least unjust to the servants --
Sarwar: This is the result of their deeds. God is not unjust to His servants."
Shakir: This is for what your own hands have sent on before, and because Allah is not in the least unjust to the servants;
Yusufali: Because of (the deeds) which your (own) hands sent forth; for Allah is never unjust to His servants:
Omar: `This (punishment) is because of (the deeds) which your (own) hands have sent forward and (know) Allâh is by no means unjust to His servants.´
Ahmed: For what you have brought upon yourselves." God is surely not unjust to His creatures, (they are unjust to themselves).
Aziz: This is for what your hands have sent on before you; and know that Allah is no tyrant to his servants."
Daryabadi: This, because of that which your hands have sent forth, and verily Allah is never unjust unto His creatures.
Haque: "This is the recompense of what your own hands have sent ahead, and Allah does not oppress His bondmen."
Unal: This is because of (the evil deeds) that you forwarded with your own hands, for never does God do the least wrong to the servants."
Asad: in return for what your own hands have wrought - for, never does God do the least wrong to His creatures!"

Ultimately knowledge is not power, application of knowledge is power and in the difference between the two is an understanding of Allah swt.

The real situation of oppression is far more complicated, I am patronising at times.

Quran 62

The example of those who were entrusted with the Torah and then did not take it on is like that of a donkey who carries volumes [of books]. Wretched is the example of the people who deny the signs of Allah . And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

Say, "O you who are Jews, if you claim that you are allies of Allah , excluding the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful."

But they will not wish for it, ever, because of what their hands have put forth. And Allah is Knowing of the wrongdoers.

To make sense of oppression being allowed, we need to accept and understand a few basic - very fundamental - premises of Islam:

1. This life is a test.
2. Life is temporary.
3. There will be a judgement day (transgressors definitely will not get away with their crimes).

In light of which: Of course there will be oppression and hardship for whomever Allah wills to bestow it upon (and conversely, of course there will be happiness and joy upon whomever Allah wills it upon). There wouldn't be any point in life being a test, or there being a judgement day, otherwise!

Hardship/misfortune or happiness/good fortune are inescapable and can happen to anyone at any point in their lives and however Allah wishes it to happen.

Good things happening to us test our ability to give thanks and bad things test our ability to be patient. Bad things happening to other people tests our reaction to their misfortune and whether or not we help them.

The level of hardship a person faces in life is indicative of the relationship Allah has with that person. The closer and more beloved the person, the more hardship are thrown his way.

We are in a transit location, awaiting a final and eternal destination. Our time on this Earth is like a drop in an ocean of the 'real' time. In this temporary abode, our patience in the face of hardship and oppression wins us rewards. Our thankfulness at being granted good things in life brings us rewards. Our helping of those less fortunate brings us rewards. Conversely, being evil and oppressing someone will be marked against us. We have a finite lifetime in which to accumulate good deeds. Our final book of bad and good deeds will determine whether or not we will enter paradise or be punished in hell.

So, no, once we understand the above, we realize that Allah is not unjust and oppression and hardship have a valid role to play in the test we face.

What is Islamic view on oppression?. Hmm, I think it's better if I talk about it from view as human.

The cause behind oppression is fear of oppression itself. This is what make the superior stronger group suppress the weaker group to prevent the weaker going stronger and take over the superiority. This fear occur because difference make people feel different than the others. If people can respect the difference, In Shaa Allah, the stronger and the weaker would feel united and could trust each other. Then one party would not suppress the another.

That's rather harsh, no? [MENTION=31766]Futuwwa[/MENTION]? I'd like to think that if Allah punishes on the spot, we'd learn from very early on when the offence were fairly innocent not to do those things or related, more grave matters.

(can't remember the exact thread title but people with those qualities will not make it in this world. For them is the hereafter. In syaa Allah. The current world works opposite.

Syaitan has promised, and he is doing what he promised. . Allah works in mysterious ways, despite all, there are plenty of believers. Only, Syaitan has caused them to split, despite Quran's warnings.
