Our appointed time- can it be hastened?

Just have a general questions. As Muslims we believe that our time of death is appointed for us already. Is it ever possible to cause our death sooner than later? For example by committing suicide ? Has that caused our death to come sooner rather than when it was meant to be?

Some might view that when the person decided to commit suicide that it was actually their appointed time to die.
Is this how we should interpret it or should we make the assumption that our appointed time is written for us based on the presumption that we live a life with a general desire to delay death to as late as possible?

[FONT=&quot]Al-Bukhari[/FONT][FONT=&quot] recorded from `Ali bin Abi Talib that they (the Companions) were with the Messenger of Allah at the cemetery of Baqi` Al-Gharqad for a funeral, when the Prophet (saw) said, "There is none among you except that his place has already been written, a seat in Paradise and a seat in the Hellfire." They said, "O Messenger of Allah! Should we depend on this'' He replied, "Perform deeds for everyone will have the deeds of what he was created for (Paradise or Hell) made easy for him."
Then he recited Surah Al Layl :

(92:5-10) [/FONT][FONT=&quot]him who gives (to others) and is Conscious of God. [/FONT][FONT=&quot]And believes in Al-Husna (Ultimate good). [/FONT][FONT=&quot]We will make smooth for him the path of ease. [/FONT][FONT=&quot]But he who is greedy and thinks himself self-sufficient. [/FONT][FONT=&quot]And denies Al-Husna. [/FONT][FONT=&quot]We will make smooth for him the path to evil.[/FONT][FONT=&quot] [/FONT]


...So its one's last actions and intentions of a person which decide for him as to where he would end up in the hereafter. The time of death is independent of a person's intentions and motives. Its time will come when it is destined and no one can stop or delay it, the person's own actions will determine at that time as to where he would end up in the hereafter.


(3:54) Say: "Even if you had remained in your homes, those for whom death was decreed would certainly have gone forth to the place of their death"

JazakAllah for bringing up an interesting question.

My mum is a revert, Alhamdulillah, and I am frequently trying to help her understand this concept as well....

Within this question, lies the concept of taqdeer.....which to be honest, is a huge topic that I personally am unqualified to speak off in much detail.


However a very short, summarised answer (from what I understand):

Our time of death (and in fact everything else in life) is indeed appointed.
None can hasten nor delay what is meant to befall you (save by Allahs decree).


"And no person can ever die except by Allâh’s Leave and at an appointed term." (surah Imran 3:145)

"And every nation has its appointed term; when their term is reached, neither can they delay it nor can they advance it an hour (or a moment)." (Al-A’raf 7:34)


So, the person who commits suicide - he has died at his appointed time - not a second, minute or day later than what has been decreed.

The manner of his death, however was influenced by his own decision that he has made (because man has been created with free will and freedom of choice).


How does predetermination come into this?
Well, some may argue that if we believe in the concept of predetermination/ qadr - then how can we still have free will? (e.g to commit suicide)


To this, it is useful to understand the 4 levels of qadr - (a summary, of a summary, of a summary......)


1. Allah knows what you will do (thousands of years before your birth).

2. Allah wrote it down.

3. Allah allows it to happen.

4. The actual happening of the event.


So, yes - you do have free will in life - e.g to take your own life.....and Allah already knows this......and it all occurs within the time that He (subhanawata ála) has appointed.

And Allah knows best.

If they committed suicide, they died at their appointed time too. But they are most likely sinful because it was most likely out of disobedience or impatience with Allah.

So the evil is disassociated from Allah, but the overall destiny was that this was the persons appointed time for death.
