Despite being immortalised as heroes and funny characters in books, films and ridiculous internet memes, pirates are in reality a rather nasty bunch of people, the terrorists of the sea, perhaps. Piracy is not just something from the days of scurvy, Davy Jones' Locker and Blackbeard, it is in fact happening right now in certain areas, and has become quite recently a real problem.

Ever since Somalia collapsed, some people in the country have been turning to predatory lifestyles, stealing and looting to make ends meet. This normally only affects Somalis themselves, so the only time we hear about it is through international aid organisations. But some do this on the sea, attacking the shipping routes though the Gulf of Aden into the Indian ocean. Which makes them mean business on a real scale.

This piracy has increased lately, for some reason, possibly because of the collapse of the Islamic Courts Union in southern Somalia. As the recent attacks have shown, no ships are safe, from cruise liners to oil tankers. Some kind of solution is needed, so that ships can travel near the horn of Africa safely again.

The question is, what should be done to curb piracy?

I don't think anything could be done about these pirates unless people are willing to lose their lives trying to kill these men.

There isn't a stable government in Somali and there is nobody to reason with because the government isn't very effective right now.

Somali has been governless for almost 2 decades now and everyone around them has been taking advantages of that oppurtunity. There is a reason behind why these men are doing what they are doing and people shouldn't be invading their territory with acknowledgement.

Then there's soldiers with Big Crosses drawn on walls in Iraq with statements like "My God is stronger/greater than yours", not to mention the "convert or die" games Soldiers have been shipped to in Iraq. Even that blond bimbo Palin mouthed off how her God told her to go clean up middle east.

Crusaders of the westerners never ended, it only got more complex and despicable. And why are you saying "calling us crusaders", are you a christian? There is no nationalism or patriotism in Islam, it doesn't matter if your american, paki, indian, european, african, saudi or what not. you're religion is Islam, your nation is the Ummah and you stand for what is right and against what is wrong.

I said "us" because I consider myself an American. We are far from perfect but I do believe we are one of the better countries. Yes I am a Muslim and am part of the Ummah first and foremost, but I disown the terrorist movement, of which the ICU is obviously a part of. For example, I believe that the people who are 9/11 Truthers, in some alternate dimension where it was common knowledge that the US government was behind the attacks, would come up with a conspiracy theory where it was actually suicidal Muslims (or Arabs, I'm not sure they should be called Muslims). But you don't accept eyewitness testimony if it makes America look good or it's enemies look wrong? What is this, a war of testimonies? If so, I'm going to accept the vast majority of them instead of taking a couple deviant ones as Gospel. You know what, if any American soldier raped any woman, may God send him to Hell! But I know some American soldiers and they are good people who are willing to sacrifice their own lives to protect their home and families. Or do you think they risk being blown to smithereens to go over and rape Iraqi women? You must believe we are monsters. You have no idea what you would do if you had been raised Christian. There are a lot of Muslim converts each year. Do you truly believe any of them would have converted if they hadn't read the Qur'an? Circumstances could easily have prevented them from dong so. Only God knows what you would do but I say you would not have converted if you hadn't read the Qur'an. I understand that, and that is what I meant by the "problem". If it was only a ship full of terrorists it would be no problem to take it out and solve the problem with only the loss of a ship. I should have clarified that better.
