Praying behind imam

I can't answer that as I have no knowledge on this specifically. But if I am not mistaken, there are several items that are wajib in performing of the solat. The 'niat', Takbirratul ihram (is that the correct term? when we say "Allahu akhbar") Al Fatihah, the tashahud and the salaams. Everything else is not compulsory.
Hence it is safe to say that it is wajib to recite the al Fatihah regardless of which prayers you are doing - the daylight silent ones or the night not silent ones. In the day you recite it silently and in the night, you recite it after the imam finishes his recitation (when he reads the second surah).
