Praying Wrong for a long time?

Cool, that will come in handy, thanks.

I did notice last night that every time they changed positions they would say "Allahu akbar." I repeated that to myself every time they did.
Brother, the Islamic prayer is fundamentally the same among the different madhabs and they are equally valid. There are subtle differences, some of which that I am aware of 1) saying 'Bismillah, ar-Rahmani ar-Raheem' out loud at the beginning of audible rakat - or not, 2) position of hands while standing over chest - or below the navel, 3) raising hands before going into or returning from ruku and upon standing after 2nd rakat - or not, 4) positioning of feet while sitting, and 5) how much one moves his right index finger during the tashahud. My personal belief is that the Shafi'i way of salah more closely agrees with different hadith I am aware of such as in Bukhari. However, these differences are small and should not be points of disagreement between Muslims.

Now I have found it already. But when I realised my mistake I really was very oooooooooops!

Assalamu Alaikum sister,

For future refference, as long as one contemplates where the Kiblat is the Salat is valid and now the good news;
The prophet s.a.w Inshallah said "In which ever direction the Mukmin decides to turn that's where the Kiblat is" (not ad verbum)

Masalam

I was thinking yesterday on the way home that it might be time for shahada. I want to participate in the prayer and not just sit on the sidelines watching. It's time to get into the game, so to speak.

With that in mind, I might make a surprise visit tomorrow...

I think it is good for you to have taken time to ask questions and try to make sure you are making the right decision. I am also glad that your heart is drawn toward salah. I look forward to hearing your good news, but I remind you to make sure that it is all for the sake of Allah (swt) alone.

Just a Guy, as Mustafa said, madhabs are essentially the same, and all are considered valid... But I just thought I'd mention that for the sake of ease on your part, you should try and (at least for now) learn prayer and other small details according to the madhab of those around you. It might make things easier for you in the long run... Just my opinion though.

Well I am going back to the masjid either today or tomorrow to work out some of the details. I have already observed a few prayers, so I am roughly familiar with how they operate there. But I decided the other night that I want to get into the game, so to speak. I don't want to sit on the sidelines forever.

All I know is that I feel more at peace with this decision the more I think about it and the more I pray to Allah about it. I feel like Allah (swt) is guiding me to this...
