Priority: Religion first, nationality first or ethnic group first?

A national survey conducted by the Merdeka Centre for Opinion Research on 1,505 Malaysians of which 52% are Malays, 20% Chinese, 8% Indians, 8% other indigenous people, 2% others.

PRIORITIES AMONG MAJOR MALAYSIAN ETHNIC GROUPS

MALAYS
* Religion First - 61%
* Nationality First - 28%
* Ethnic Group First - 5%

CHINESE
* Religion First - 5%
* Nationality First - 44%
* Ethnic Group First - 47%

INDIANS
* Religion First - 5%
* NAtionality First - 75%
* Ethnic Group First - 14%

On statement :"One's responsibility should first begin by helping members of one's ethnic group before helping others in society:

* Malays - 63% agreed
* Chinese - 44% agreed
* Indians - 22% agreed

on question "what their expectation of Malaysian society?"
* 43% of the respondents desired a society where various races and cultures were treated equally.

* 27% of the respondents wanted a more democratic society.

* 18% of the respondents wanted a society where Islam played a bigger role.

* 6% of the respondents wanted a Malay-dominant society.

everything in sales...

just name it and you'll have it....(but of coz you have to pay first).

Some interesting insight.
Only 5% of the CHINESE and Indians put religion first. Yet 61 % of the Malays put it first. Since just over 60% of the population is Muslims, could I assume that most all of the Malays are Muslims? Any one know?

The official religion is Islam. The judicial system is based on English law.

I would think that an assumption that the 39% of the population that are not Muslims don’t want Islam to play a bigger role. So if18% of the respondents wanted a society where Islam played a bigger role. That would mean that about 70% of the Muslims don’t want it. What ever, the vast majority don’t support more religion in government.

I wonder how many would like to see a society where Islam played less of a role.

Hmm, that should remind me not to equate opinions off the majority on this forum with the majority of Muslims in general. I would say on this forum an overwhelming majority wants more Islam in society.

Maybe I should also find a forum with more secular Muslims, so I can keep a proper perspective. Does anyone have any suggestions? :)

According to Malaysian Federal Constitution:

A 'Malay' is a Malaysian citizen:

a) Who professed the religion of Islam
b) habitually speak Malay Language
c) practice Malay culture.

If a 'Malay' ceased to be a Muslim, he/she alse ceased to be a 'Malay'.
