Dubai: More than 70 male and female inmates were honoured yesterday for memorising chapters of the Quran or the entire book.
The Dubai International Holy Quran Award (DIHQA), in cooperation with Dubai Police's Punitive and Correctional Establishment, honoured 77 male and female inmates who memorised the entire or parts of the Quran in 2006.
Upon the directives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the inmates who memorised the Quran, got a deduction in their sentence said Ebrahim Mohammad Bu Melha, Chairman of the DIHQA organising committee.
The number of inmates who participated in the programme since it started in 2002 and until last year was 2,379, while the inmates who benefited from deductions in their jail sentences since the programme started and until now is 665 male and female inmates," Bu Melha said.
