I was taught that the Hijab is not merely a scarf wrapped around the head
That complete real Hijab is to cover the body from head to toe including niqaab face...


Does that mean when I go out of my house covering my head with only a shawl it is not hijab so I am sinning for not wearing proper Hijab???

It's like a khimar..

So I'm a major sinner?...
 
Yes, the proper hijab is wide, not perfumed, and doesn't show the woman's body. And yes you could sin cause your hair is not your only awrah, it's your entire body, except for your face and hands. So jilbab is the proper hijab.

But if you want to be like the wives of the prophet, you Can hide your face with niqab.
