I am reading a book by Ibn Kathir titled stories of the Prophet (peace be upon them
perhaps this is a flaw in my understanding but I seem to be coming upon a contradiction in this book and need your help to clarify:
In this book it states that Adam has two sons Cain (qabil) and Abel (habil) and the standard story goes that the older son kills abel.
This is all crystal clear but the confusion starts when it the books goes on to discuss post death of Adam (pBUh). It says that his son is "seth" (****h) which means Gift of Allah and that they named him that because they were given him after Abel was killed. ( I just copied this from book and paraphrased).
so first confusion is... who is Seth? is this simply another son of Adam aside from qabil and habil?
also it is stated that after death of Adam (pbuh) seth took charge of his mission and he was a prophet as narrated by Ibn hibban from abu dhar. it also says that before this death, seth entrusted the charge to his son enos and then kenan and then mahalalel and then his son jared and then his son Enoch who is known as Idris.
The book goes on and says that in the story of Idris that after Adam and Seth, he was the first man to be sent as a prophet pbuh. (so does this mean that kenan and mahalael and such were not prophets?)
Also the major contradiction I came across in this book where is says that Ibn Ishaq said (regarding Idris): he was first man to write with a pen. he was born while Adam still had 3 hundred and 80 years of his life to live.
How can this be, how can Idris be born when Adam has 380 years of his life to live? Did Seth not lead or take on Adam's mission after the death of Adam, and then came Enos .....etc all the way to jared and then Enoch (Edris)...
could this just be some difference of opinion? please explain I am very confused.
