Today I saw a big program on PTSD which the returning American troops suffer from after returning from Iraq (boo hoo).

So what causes it and what is PTSD?

According to Wikipedia [1]
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a term for certain severe psychological consequences of exposure to, or confrontation with, stressful events that the person experiences as highly traumatic. Clinically, such events involve actual or threatened death, serious physical injury, or a threat to physical and/or psychological integrity, to a degree that usual psychological defenses are incapable of coping with the impact. It is occasionally called post-traumatic stress reaction to emphasize that it is a result of traumatic experience rather than a manifestation of a pre-existing psychological weakness. The presence of a PTSD response is influenced by the intensity of the experience, its duration, and the individual person involved.

Its all very ok showing how the troops are effected by it. But we have to realize these are well fed troops who are getting therapy now and returned home.

How about the people of Afghanistan and Iraq? Dont they suffer it too? Dont they need therapy too? Who is going to provide it?
What about them, why dosent the media cover them?

It is sad to see that the media chooses to cast 'sympathetic reports' about how the troops are suffering, while the citizens of the invaded country could be blown to bits and its just 'collateral damage'

Just one of those things which we never realize happens during war. so I wanted to publish this little article in order to increase the awareness of the problems the USA and UK are causing on the people of Iraq and Afghanistan. Permanently scarring the general population by dropping bombs on their cities.

We should recognize the real terrorists for what they are: War Mongers.

As for why the media doesn't cover Iraqi and Afghan stress disorder...they get their heads cut off if they actually travel without a military escort, and the military doesn't have time to babysit reporters so they can ask Iraqis about their stress levels. From what I've seen, the majority of these cases stem from the stress associated with something as simple as driving around, constantly worrying about IED devices.

The reason the American media covers these issues is because they are American soldiers.

PTSD is not just limited to war. It also occurs after traumatic natural disastors such as Tornados, Tsunamis, Volcanic Eruptions etc. Oddly it does not occur as often in predictable cycler events such as hurricanes, typhons and seasonal floods.

the biggest cause seems to be living under the stress of not knowing what is happening or what to expect.

With that said I believe a very large number of the people in Afghanistan are suffering from it.

How to get them help? I do not know. They are going to be very suspicious and untrusting of any one who tries to help them.

Even here in the States where help is readily available, many victims of PTSD are too fearful and will live on the streets homeless, rather then "Risk" looking for help.

yes, that is why wars often produce this PTSD. a lot of abused children suffer from it also.

yah i was jus gonna say that. sufferers from rape too. basically "traumatic events" (based on the reasonable and sober persons perception of trauma - in law i believe)

you only have to read diaries from world war two to realise this.

but this kinda argument always leaves me frustrated, because i feel like "ok and what"..what can we do.. in regards to the "media is anti-islamic" debate with this information? nothng rlly.

its jus so confusin
