Don't get me wrong sis. I use "Tu" in du'aa & have done for a few years now. Would use "Aap" when i was younger.

Like in Bangla, "Tumi" is a term you'd use for someone you know really well, informally. Where as "Aapne" would be used to show regards and respect, even though you don't mean it. They also have some sort kiss-my-feet policy. And I'm not exaggerating. They bend down and kiss the person's feet, as a supposed sign of respect. EW! :hiding:

That is a misconception fed to us (Punjabis) by the Urdu speaking elitists, at least thats my thinking as I did my whole schooling there. Tu or Tum are as respectful as aap. The only difference is the subject we are referring to. Tu/Tum is very informal, does not mean you are being disrespectful, and aap is very formal, you use it when you dont know anybody or when someone is too senior in age and the difference in thinking is wide.

Urdu speakers also use "Tu." I am more of a Urdu speaker, even though I am Punjabi, but I still use "Tu" for Allah (swt). "Aap" shows far distance from Allah (swt), at least to my mind.

Aap can be used for more than one person eg you can address a group of people all together as aap. Tu is used for only one, and thus denotes Allah' s oneness. People who use aap use it out of respect, people who use tu use it to denote closeness and oneness.

It is not wrong to say aap for Allah, in the same way it is not wrong to say Tu. Neither is wrong. Both are right.
