reading the Quran and the hijab

am a new Muslim and i want to read the quran but i cant remember if i should be wearing the hajab as i read it :hijab:

Really? I never knew that subhanAllah, I thought it was compulsory, even when alone - I'd feel kinda uncomfortable now with my head uncovered.

You don't need to have hijab on, just make sure you have wudhu in Sha Allah

The words of Allah :swt: should be in easy reach, every time we need guidance. Facebook is just a notification away, what about the Qur'an?

Every obstacle between you and the Qur'an will create a mental mind barrier. You will begin to think, "Oh should I read the Qur'an? Wait I have to put my hijab pin on, fully cover my self, put my hijab on.". Then this is the perfect moment where Uncle Shaytan comes in and says "Ohh you can read it later".

Another mental barrier.. Where people have the most beautiful Qur'an cases, then they stack it up high on the shelf. You'll be thinking subconsciously "Oh I have to reach high, open the case".

Between you and the Qur'an, make it easy as possible.

Sometimes when you come on IB, you can recite from: http://www.islamicboard.com/Quran.html , every single letter you recite will be rewarded :ia:.

That makes a lot of sense, the Qur'an should be easily approachable. It just sounds really strange because I was taught that a woman should observe full purdah when reading or listening to the Qur'an otherwise it would be disrespectful, it sounds silly I know but I do the full abaya and hijab thing before I read it. Alhamdulillah you don't have to do that then.

It's a widespread belief though. I was at my friend's house, it was just me and her brother at home so she was dressed quite casually. We was listening to a recitation of the Qur'an on her phone, and she had lightly draped a scarf around her head. Her older brother walked in and freaked out on her for not covering properly and at me for not telling her. He was mad about it.

Must be one of those cultural things which seep into Islam somehow.

I have seen cultural practices in my pakistani culture which makes a barrier for reader of quran. About covering the head thing, you know in many families it is also belief that women should cover hair when they hear adhaan Similarly there is also belief that no one should show hid back to Quran and that it is a sin. Even though some scholars do say that we should not show back, but they only put slightly stress over it, never a sin. But people have made it a sin. In some mosques if you a reading a quran and someone is sitting in front of you with his back towards you, someone will come and object to you that why you are reading while a person is showing his back Lol this happens in many mosques in Pakistan.
Quran should be on easy access so that we can read it easily whenever we want without thinking of any barrier

Yes bro, that's in my community too, you have to wear a scarf on hearing the adhaan or you would get funny looks - ironically many of those who enforce this rule don't wear the hijab on generally. Sometimes it can be hard to distinguish between what is Islam and what is culture.

Actually it becomes very clear to distinguish between culture and Islam. The more you learn about Islam, the more you develop a kind of sixth sense than you start to get a feel what is right and what is wrong even if you dont know something from scholarly poont of view. Even Prophet S.A.W. said in one of the hadith that a momin should ask his heart for the fatwa. Many things which are not allowed out own heart tell us to stay away from it.

yea my husband use say i should cover then i watched few lectures on youtube saw that i didnt need do that as long u have wudu its fine lol

Your husband say correct sister.If you are read quran for just learning, you can see the true signs in nur and ashab surah-ı celila.And i have to add that cover makes you free insocial life .
I mean; You can do everything what did you have to do with cover as a human in stead of woman
I hope you will choice the best clothes as a muslim.Take care of yourselves...

What are the rituals before reading the Qur'aan? And, does a sister have to be covered (full hijab) when reading it?

Praise be to Allaah. It is not obligatory for a woman to put on hijaab in order to read Qur’aan, because there is no evidence to indicate that this is obligatory.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said that reciting Qur’aan does not require covering the head.
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said in his comments on sujood al-tilaawah (prostration required when reading certain verses of the Qur’aan): “Sujood al-tilaawah is to be done when reading Qur’aan. It may be done in any state, even with the head uncovered, etc., because this prostration is not subject to the rulings on prayer.”

(Fataawa al-Jaami’ah li’l-mar’ah al-Muslimah, 1/249. See also Question no. 4908)
“With regard to reading Qur’aan, it is not permissible for one who is in a state of janaabah (impurity following sexual activity) to read Qur’aan either from the Mus-haf or otherwise until he has done ghusl, because it was narrated that nothing prevented the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) from reading Qur’aan except janaabah. But if a person has broken his wudoo’ (minor impurity), then it is permissible for him to recite Qur’aan from memory because of the general meaning of the evidence.”
(Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, 10/150)

It is better, and is mustahabb, to do wudoo’ before reciting, because this Qur’aan is the Word of Allaah. So it is better to do wudoo’ before reading it as a sign of respect. But touching the Mus-haf is not permissible unless one has done wudoo’, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Which (that Book with Allaah) none can touch but the purified”
[al-Waaqi’ah 56:79]
