Someone recently posted this at Hibatullah Forum

Question:
I want to ask that the use of Emotions i.e. smiles in chat or email comes under drawing pictures?

Answer:

The use of emotional signs, for example, smile, sad, etc. in a cellphone falls in the category of animate pictures.

It is prohibited to make use of such emotional signs in a cellphone.

Mufti Ebrahim Desai

This is part of answer that i found at IslamQA

2 – Her speech should not include anything that may provoke fitnah, such as jokes, soft speech or laughter, such as writing “hahahahaha” as mentioned in the question, or using emoticons to represent smiles, because that may lead to the one in whose heart is a disease being moved with desire, as in the verse (interpretation of the meaning):

“O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you keep your duty (to Allaah), then be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy, or evil desire for adultery) should be moved with desire, but speak in an honourable manner”

JazakAllah Abdullah :thumbs_up my opinions on that have changed alot over time, I still dont know what i think, but on hibatullah I only tend to use the normal smile --> :) its just so that people feel welcome and can feel the mood of the poster, thats all...buh I dunno :hmm:

At least :skeleton: still looks good.

That is one I need. As so offen it is the only one that expresses my true feelings. :skeleton:

I know exactly what you mean...afterall i'm sure no one uses the emoticons with a bad intention (Allahu A'lam) & the emoticons show that theres people writing these posts...people with feelings that can be expressed through emoticons

However it would be wrong to go against our Ulema too...

this has been discussed before - there are different opinions on the subject.
they do not really look like human beings.
i think they are extremely valuable and prevent misunderstanding when you have people on the internet talking from many different cultures/countries.
so don't you dare make 'em go away, you hear? :raging::raging::raging:
