Scattered papers…

Once upon a time an old man spread rumors that his neighbor was a thief. As a result, the young man was arrested. Days later the young man was proven innocent. After been released he sued the old man for wrongly accusing him.

In court the old man told the Judge: 'They were just comments, didn't harm anyone..'

The judge, before passing sentence on the case, told the old man: 'Write all the things you said about him on a piece of paper. Cut them up and on the way home, throw the pieces of paper out. Tomorrow, come back to hear the sentence.'

The next day, the judge told the old man: 'Before receiving the sentence, you will have to go out and gather all the pieces of paper that you threw out yesterday.'
The old man said: 'I can't do that! The wind spread them and I won't know where to find them.'

The judge then replied: 'The same way, simple comments may destroy the honor of a man to such an extent that one is not able to fix it. If you can't speak well of someone, rather don't say anything.
'Let's all be masters of our mouths, so that we won't be slaves of our words.'

Bismillahair Rahmaan Naraheem
I remember this.It was one of the great khutbahs(lectures) my local Imam gave. May Allah bless him immensly. These days people do not tend to reasearch the facts before giving the word out. As of right now here in Surrey,Canada, many so called halal stores are being accused of not being halal because the BCMA(British Columbia Muslims Association) asks for a certain amount of money to declare that the stores indeed are halal. Most stores(95%) did not do this and one store did. That store is now receiving all the business of the 16 other stores. The point is that people now think whoever the association declares is right but no that is a rumour. The same thing for restaurants only two are halal in Surrey,Richmond and Vancouver? Out of 136? These rumours need to put an end in and we should be gracious to Allah who provided us everything as our mighty creator.

Walakum Asalam Warakmatulah Wabarkatuh

Sounds a LOT like this story:

The Gosspier

Author Unknown

A woman repeated a bit of gossip about a neighbor. Within a few days the whole community knew the story. The person it concerned was deeply hurt and offended.

Later the woman responsible for spreading the rumor learned that it was completely untrue. She was very sorry and went to a wise old Ustadh to find out what she could do to repair the damage.

"Go to the marketplace," he said, "and purchase a chicken, and have it killed. Then on your way home, pluck its feathers and drop them one by one along the road." Although surprised by this advice, the woman did what she was told.

The next day the wise man said, "Now go and collect all those feathers you dropped yesterday and bring them back to me."

The woman followed the same road, but to her dismay, the wind had blown the feathers all away. After searching for hours, she returned with only three in her hand.

"You see," said the old Ustadh, "it's easy to drop them, but it's impossible to get them back.

So it is with gossip. It doesn't take much to spread a rumor, but once you do, you can never completely undo the wrong."

I watched a fiction movie on rumours yesterday. They spread like fires and kill like tigers. Dont spread any doubts, what goes around comes around.

thanks for the share and it has a good point mashAllah

That is excellent post and a reminder too. I personally had to deal with students at school and at college, who spread nasty rumours about me that tarnished my reputation. Very upsetting.

An emotionial moment..but lets not get offtopic:)

The stories may be different in a way carry the same message.

About spreading rumors, (I'm American, therefore I spell it "Rumors". It is NOT a typo! :D ), is that it plays a domino effect. One after the other it goes around spilling the milk. It's something we all do in some form or another, and that includes myself big time. It's a quality to be always able to speak good. As they say, Silence is Salvation. Though, it's also important to socialize.

And like dominos it comes back around to that person.
