As-Salaam alaikum,

"VERILY, IN THE REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH DO HEARTS FIND REST(Satisfaction)" (Surat Ra'ad-13:28)

And in the Hadith, we have learnt that : "There is a place of flesh in the body, if it becomes good (reformed), the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoiled, the whole body gets spoiled and that is the heart."

The Ulama identified 4 stations of the heart, each having its own characteristics and functions, namely :--
(1) The Breast (Sadr) - This is the seat/abode of the light of Islam (Nur al-Islam).
(2) The Heart proper (qalb) - This is within the breast, and is the abode of the light of faith (Nur al-Imaan). Faith is the acceptance by the heart of the truth of God's revelation.
(3) The Inner Heart (Fu'ad) - - This is the abode of the light of gnosis (Nur al-ma'arifah). It is associated with the vision (ru'yah) of reality. Whereas the heart has mere knowledge of reality, the inner heart actually sees reality.
(4) The Intellect (lubb) - This is the innermost sphere of the heart, and is the abode of unification (nur al-Tawheed). It is the basis of the 3 other spheres and is the recipient of God's grace and bounty.

Sheikh Abu Abdullah at-Tirmidhi Hakeem said that "the Zikr (remembrance) of Allah moistens the heart (in all its 4 stations above) and cultivates tenderness in it. When the heart is bereft of Zikrullah, the heat of the nafs (source of evil desires and passions) overtakes it, the fire of lust reaches it and it becomes barren and hard ".

To be able to live, and hopefully die, with a sound heart (al-qalbin- saleem), we must employ ourselves in devotion to God through obedience to Him and follow the Sunnah of His Messenger, the Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam.
