Stoning to death as a punishment

Asalam alaikum all,
I am a little confused in my head. I was searching on the web last night and came across a video of stoning to death punishment for an adulterer in Iran. It was in 1991 but I was still really disturbed by what I saw. I don't understand why in a religion that is based on peace and is so beautiful in its teachings can still condone this???? Please someone I know that adultery is a sin, as is so many other things, but why is it ok to kill someone so brutally????
Please someone give me insight into this????
