but it says it only happens to planets that are further outside... are you sure it includes planet earth?

"All of the outer planets display retrograde motion at one time or another, but Mars has the best show. Mars is closer and so it is easier to detect it's changing motion against the background stars more easily than with a more distant planet. "
what do they mean by 'outer planets'.. outer with respect to what?
sorry if my understanding isn't quite right, but doesnt retro motion occur due to one body revolving along an orbit?? the sun is in the center, it doesnt quite move along an orbit as do Earth and mars, so how will the sun exhibit retro motion with respect to earth?
