Say, "Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful. Whichever [name] you call - to Him belong the best names." And do not recite [too] loudly in your prayer or [too] quietly but seek between that an [intermediate] way.

[Qur'aan 17:110]

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (sallallaau alayhi wa sallam) said, "Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise."

[Sahiih al-Bukhaari ]

This thread is dedicated to the Names of Allaah.

The scholars have differed in regards to the Names. We will look at the differences. We will also look at the Names and their meanings.

The thread is not meant to judge between who is correct and who is incorrect. Rather, it presents the Qur'aan, Sunnah, opinions of the scholars, the Names of Allaah, their meanings, and ways to make Dua from them.

Please refrain from turning this thread into a battle ground. Feel free to post.

"...knows them will go to Paradise."

memorising the names in arabic is enough or need to know the english translations as well?

Also read something similar about memorising 40 hadiths etc.

There is a difference of opinion among the scholars regarding this issue. Ibn Hajar has presented the different views and explained which ones he believes are weak.

Some these views include

Simply memorizing the Names. According to certain scholars that suffices.

From among these scholars who say that the memorization relates to the Names while another group says that it relates to the meanings of the Name and not their wordings only.

Another group says what is mentioned in the Hadith means you act in accordance with the Names. To act means that when you know Allaah is Razzaaq then you have full belief that He will provide you with rizq. When you know that He is Hakiim then you submit to everything that comes your way because you know it is all filled with wisdom since it came your way by the Permission of Allaah.

Then, there are those who say you have to memorize them and act in accordance with them.

Those who say that memorizing them suffices use as evidence the fact that in some routes of this hadiith the Arabic word memorize has been used. They also say the Mercy of Allaah is great and He will reward for even simply memorizing them.

Greetings and peace be with you ZeeshanParvez;

Thanks for the reminder. I am inspired by the first name of Allah - Ar-Rahmaan - The Beneficent - He who wills goodness and mercy for all His creatures.

If Allah wills goodness and mercy for All his creation, then so should we.

Blessings
Eric

Every scholar agrees on this Name. There is no difference of opinion on this Name. This Name has come in the Qur'aan approximately 2635 times.

When you call upon with this Name you attach Yaa to the beginning.

يا الله

Yaa Allaah

Notice, the Alif laam at the beginning of the Name does not go away when one precedes the Name with Yaa. This is in contrast to the other Names of Allaah. When you precede al-Rahmaan (pronounced ar-Rahmaan) with Yaa, it becomes Yaa Rahmaan. The Alif Laam is dropped.
