The following Surah was revealed in connection to Prophet Muhammad's (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) uncle Abu Lahab - a staunch and bitter enemy of Islam.
The Surah prophesized that Abu Lahab will die as a disbeliever and go to Hell i.e. that he will never accept Islam. And since this surah was revealed in the lifetime of the Prophet's (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) uncle, (ten years to be exact) it was a daring statement for the Prophet to make - unless the source of this perfect knowledge had come from God Himself. Only God Who has the Power over all things could protect the Truth of His statement from being refuted and ridiculed.
Abu Lahab, wanted to destroy Islam so much that he used to follow the Prophet (peace be upon him) and humiliated him at every opportunity. If he saw Muhammad (peace be upon him) talking to strangers, he would tell them that the Prophet was a liar and make people suspicious about him. After the revelation of Surah Al Masad - Abu Lahab had ten years to prove the Quran wrong. Ten tears is a long time considering he could have declared to accept Islam as soon as the Surah was revealed and proven the Quran wrong straight away. Yet he could not prove the Quran wrong then or during the rest of his life time. He could not even pretend to do it and died exactly as the Quran had prophesized he would.
There is no power or might except with Allah. May Allah protect us from disbelief and keep us firmly on the Right Path. Ameen
Surah Al Masad Chapter 111
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he.
His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained. He will [enter to] burn in a Fire of [blazing] flame
And his wife [as well] - the carrier of firewood.
Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fiber.
