Hello again! I'm a wannabe Orthodox Christian, and a month or so ago looked into Islam. Just to make sure I have the right religion, you know? I picked up a copy of the Qu'ran and quickly any thought of becoming Muslim was dispelled. However, I have taken a recent and more sincere interest this time.

My reasoning is this. Muslims, non-Christians, etc. take the Bible out of context in a feeble attempt to prove a point. I have seen this on atheist websites, Muslim websites, and others. The same is said, however, of Christians. I see Qu'ran verses they pick and choose, and I went ahead and accepted that. But now I want to ask about those verses, along with a few other questions, so I can make sure I make a slightly more thorough and not a rash decision.

Here is one site. [link removed]

These quotes definitely do not seem like a peaceful religion.

I cannot give the exact verses. However, a few things that also make me question:

- It says he seized, foamed at the mouth, among other things (mohammed) when he was about ready to give "God's word" or something to that effect. Which, to me, seems like a disease of some sort than him receiving a Holy word...

- The whole Mohammed/young little girl thing. Really gross.

- The men having the virgins in heaven, as well as other "worldly" pleasures in heaven such as exquisite food and drink and whatnot

These three verses (I hope you know the ones I am speaking of, I tried Google and failed, but I read them myself in my actual Qu'ran) as well as the verses in the link that seem to be the opposite of peace. These lead me to question Islam. But, as I said, instead of assumptions I am coming here sincerely and asking for answers.

Also, a few other things...

How can a "merciful, beneficial, loving, etc." God condemn His own creation He "loves so much" into eternal hellfire and suffering and torment? 100 years max, a lot of times a lot less, for eternity of pain? Ya. Not getting the whole "loving God" thing. I've managed to reconcile this with Orthodox Christianity, which is different than the Protestant view of Hell. However, Islam seems to be quite steadfast in "all believer suffer for ALL ETERNITY in hellfire" which doesn't seem nice loving merciful at all.

Are the "church services" in Islam? How is the worship performed?

Thanks!

Link removed. That's OK. ^-^ I'll just post the Koran quotes the website (and another one) linked so I can hopefully get clarification and not just take the website at face value.

Q 2:263

This Book is not to be doubted.... As for the unbelievers, it is the same whether or not you forewarn them; they will not have faith. God has set a seal upon their hearts and ears; their sight is dimmed and grievous punishment awaits them.

Q 2:2-6

The only true faith in God's sight is Islam.

Q 3:19

He that chooses a religion over Islam, it will not be accepted from him and in the world to come he will be one of the lost.

Q 3:86

It is not for true believers men or women to take their choice in the affairs if God and His apostle decree otherwise. He that disobeys God and His apostle strays far indeed.

Q 33:36

If you doubt what We have revealed to Our servant, produce one chapter comparable to it. Call upon your idols to assist you, if what you say be true. But if you fail (as you are sure to fail) then guard yourselves against the Fire whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the unbelievers.

Q 2:23-5

God's curse be upon the infidels! Evil is that for which they have bartered away their souls. To deny God's own revelation, grudging that He should reveal His bounty to whom He chooses from among His servants! They have incurred God's most inexorable wrath. An ignominious punishment awaits the unbelievers.

Q 2:92-6

Abraham and Ishmael built the House and dedicated it, saying . . . "Lord, make us submissive to You; make of our descendants a nation that will submit to You..."

Q 2:127

We have made you a just nation, so that you may testify against mankind and that your own Apostle may testify against you.

Q 2:143

Fight for the sake of God those that fight against you, but do not attack them first. God does not love the aggressors.

Slay them wherever you find them. Drive them out of the places from which they drove you. Idolatry is worse than carnage.

Q 2:190-3

When the sacred months are over slay the idolaters wherever you find them. Arrest them, besiege them, and lie in ambush everywhere for them.

Q 9:5

Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites and deal rigorously with them. Hell shall be their home: an evil fate.

Q 9:73

Men have authority over women because God has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient.

Q 4:34

The righteous shall return to a blessed retreat: the gardens of Eden, whose gates shall open wide to receive them. Reclining there with bashful virgins for companions, they will call for abundant fruit and drink.

Q 38:51-2

On that day [the unbelievers] shall be sternly thrown into the fire of Hell . . . But in fair gardens the righteous shall dwell in bliss, rejoicing in what their Lord will give them. Their Lord will shield them from the scourge of Hell. He will say: Eat and drink to your hearts content. This is the reward of your labours.

They shall recline on couches ranged in rows. To dark-eyed houris [virgin girls] We shall wed them. . . . Fruit We shall give them, and such meats as they desire. They will pass from hand to hand a cup inspiring no idle talk, no sinful urge; and there shall wait on them young boys of their own, as fair as virgin pearls.

Q 52:13-24

Reclining there upon soft couches, they shall feel neither the scorching heat nor the biting cold. Trees will spread their shade around them, and fruits will hang in clusters over them.

They shall be served with silver dishes, and beakers as large as goblets; silver goblets which they themselves shall measure: and cups brim-full with ginger-flavoured water from a fount called Salsabil. They shall be attended by boys graced with eternal youth, who to the beholders eyes will seem like sprinkled pearls. When you gave upon that scene, you will behold a kingdom blissful and glorious.

Greetings JustinHesychast,

Welcome to the forum and thank you for your interest in Islam.

I removed the link to the website you posted because we do not allow anti-Islamic websites, and furthermore there were inaccurate quotes on that site which are not consistent with Islamic teachings at all. When visiting sites on the internet, it must be remembered that things are often misrepresented and inaccurate, which is why it is vital to consult a trustworthy and knowledgeable source.

I understand that you are having trouble understanding certain verses from the Qur'an. May I suggest you browse through our site, load-islam.com, where there is a whole section dedicated to clarifying misconceptions. This link may be helpful: http://www.load-islam.com/artical_det.php?artical_id=414&section=wel_islam&subsection=Misconceptions

If there are any other verses, we can discuss them individually, God-willing.

- It says he seized, foamed at the mouth, among other things (mohammed) when he was about ready to give "God's word" or something to that effect. Which, to me, seems like a disease of some sort than him receiving a Holy word...
Where does it say that? I've never come across anything like that at all. Muhammad (pbuh) was visited by an angel when he received the first revelation, and after this he returned to his wife feeling very afraid of this experience.

Regarding his marriage with 'Aishah, you can find numerous discussions on this subject on the forum. Please see:

Paradise is a place very different to this world, as it is a place of indescribable bliss which no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and that has never ever crossed the minds of people, to the extent that even the person who has the least blessings in Paradise will think that he is the most blessed one. Allaah, the Most High, has only given us glimpses of Paradise in the Qur'an and sunnah, and to gain a better understanding of this issue, please have a look at the following links:

How can a "merciful, beneficial, loving, etc." God condemn His own creation He "loves so much" into eternal hellfire and suffering and torment? 100 years max, a lot of times a lot less, for eternity of pain? Ya. Not getting the whole "loving God" thing. I've managed to reconcile this with Orthodox Christianity, which is different than the Protestant view of Hell. However, Islam seems to be quite steadfast in "all believer suffer for ALL ETERNITY in hellfire" which doesn't seem nice loving merciful at all.
In short, Allaah, the Most High, has created human beings to worship Him alone, and has promised to reward the believers with Paradise and disbelievers with Hell. Allaah is also the most fair and the best Judge, so it is not Him who wrongs His creation, rather it is they who wrong themselves by being stubborn and too proud to take heed of the warnings given to them and rejecting the clear signs that Allaah sends out of His immense mercy.

If one learns about Allaah, Exalted is He, we realise how merciful He actually is, for He has informed us that His mercy encompasses His wrath, and there are countless other examples and illustrations of this fact. Regardless of people disbelieving in Him, He still provides for them and bestows favours upon them, and there are many, many, examples of how He has overlooked the transgressions and evils committed by various peoples and nations. So the mere fact that Allaah punishes does not detract from His attributes of mercy and forgiveness. Many people use the concept of 'love' to justify any action they wish, but in Islam, what is important is doing that which earns the Pleasure of Allaah and abstaining from that which incurs His Wrath.

Are the "church services" in Islam? How is the worship performed?
Performing prayer is one of the 5 pillars of Islam, and is thus an essential aspect of the religion. Muslim men go to the Mosque to perform prayers in congregation, 5 times a day, while women pray at home. The following thread may also have some relevance to your question:

Greetings, Muhammad,

An interesting post - thank you.

Could you explain this part, please? I'm not sure what you mean by the phrase in bold:

If one learns about Allaah, Exalted is He, we realise how merciful He actually is, for He has informed us that His mercy encompasses His wrath, and there are countless other examples and illustrations of this fact.

Peace

Thank you for all the links! ^_^

The thread on Paradise clarified many things, yet it did explicitly state that there will be worldly pleasures, and for the martyr (which I now know is not someone who blows himself up) there are 72 virgins. I do understand that the Qu'ran focuses on much deeper things, but I have to question (again, in all sincerity) the Muslim view of Paradise with worldly pleasures such as food, drink, and virgins.

About Hell, this is what many Christ Protestants told me in a nutshell. I just... I can't seem to comprehend a loving compassionate God burning and punishing and mutilating people because they screwed up for 60 or 70 some odd years. Eternity is a long time for only a few decades...

I am still reading the other threads, particularly in regard to the marriage of Aisha. Thanks!

Also, here is what I read in regards to Mohammed foaming at the mouth and whatnot.

The authoritative Hadith (Tradition) relate that Muhammad used to faint whenever revelations came to him. It is claimed he used to act like a drunkard (See Al-Sirah al-Nabawiya, by Ibn Hisham; chapter on how the revelation came). In his book, Al-Quran al-Majid, Darwaza claims that Muhammad was taken out of this world. Abu Huraira says that “whenever Muhammad received revelation, he was overwhelmed by trembling.” Another account says: “He became distressed, foamng at the mouth and closing his eyes. At times he snorted like a young camel” (Ahmad b. Hanbal I, 34, 464, VI. 163)…..Umar b. al-Khattab said: “When revelation descended upon Muhammad, one could hear it near his face like the humming of bees” (Ahmad b. Hanbal, I. 34

Greetings Callum,

It's been a while that I've spoken with you :).

I apologise for not being clear. Perhaps the following verses from the Qur'an and narrations from the Prophet will better explain what I was referring to.

Allaah, Exalted is He, says in the Qur'an - the meaning of which is:

Say: "To whom belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth'' Say: "To Allah.'' He has prescribed mercy for Himself. [6:12]

In relation to this verse, there is an authentic narration from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he said, "When Allah created the creation, He wrote in a Book that He has with Him above the Throne; `My mercy overcomes My anger.'"

A similar concept can be found in these verses:

And Musa chose out of his people seventy (of the best) men for Our appointed time and place of meeting, and when they were seized with a violent earthquake, he said: "O my Lord, if it had been Your Will, You could have destroyed them and me before; would You destroy us for the deeds of the foolish among us It is only Your trial by which You lead astray whom You will, and keep guided whom You will. You are our protector, so forgive us and have mercy on us: for You are the best of those who forgive.

"And ordain for us good in this world, and in the Hereafter. Certainly we have Hudna unto You.'' He said: (As to) My punishment I afflict therewith whom I will and My mercy embraces all things. That (mercy) I shall ordain for those who have Taqwa, and give Zakah; and those who believe in Our Ayat. [7:155-156]

There are also some hadeeth relating to this topic:

Imam Ahmad recorded that Jundub bin `Abdullah Al-Bajali said, "A bedouin man came, he made his camel kneel and he tied it. Then he prayed behind the Messenger of Allah . When the Messenger of Allah finished the prayer, that man untied his camel mounted it and supplicated aloud, `O Allah! Grant Your mercy to me and to Muhammad, and do not give a share in it to anyone else.' The Messenger of Allah commented (to his Companions),

"Do you think that this man is more misguided or his camel Did you not hear what this man has said)" They said, `Yes.' He said,
"You (the bedouin man) have restricted a vast mercy! Allah, the Exalted, the most Honored has created a hundred mercies and sent down one of them by which the creation, men, Jinn and animals, show mercy to each other. He left with Him ninety-nine mercies, so do you say that this man is more misguided or his camel"" Ahmad and Abu Dawud collected this Hadith.

Imam Ahmad recorded that Salman narrated that the Prophet said, "Allah, the Exalted and Most Honored, has a hundred mercies. With one of them, the creations show mercy to each other, and even the beasts show kindness to their offspring. He has kept ninety-nine mercies with Him for the Day of Resurrection." Muslim recorded it.

So these are examples of the mercy of Allaah, which is indeed a vast topic in itself and many more examples could be cited. Here are a couple of threads for further information, though there are many:

Greetings Justin,

Hanbal, I. 34
The process of revelation has been explained in a number of authentic narrations from the Prophet (peace be upon him), and I have never read anything to the effect of the above. In fact, I suspect the above may be used by anti-islamic sites in an attempt to distort Islamic teachings and portray them in as negative a light as possible.

Turning out attention to an authoritative and popular biography of Muhammad (peace be upon him), a book called The Sealed Nectar (Ar Raheeq Al Makhtoom), which was awarded First prize by the Muslim world league at world-wide competition on the biography of the Prophet held at Makkah Al-Mukarramah, there is a detailed account of the first time the revelation was brought down to the Prophet (pbuh):
‘Aishah, the veracious, gave the following narration of that most significant event that brought the Divine light which would dispel the darkness of disbelief and ignorance. It led life down a new course and brought about the most serious amendment to the line of the history of mankind:

Forerunners of the Revelation assumed the form of true visions that would strikingly come true all the time. After that, solitude became dear to him and he would go to the cave, Hira’, to engage in Tahannuth (devotion) there for a certain number of nights before returning to his family, and then he would return for provisions for a similar stay.

At length, unexpectedly, the Truth (the angel) came to him and said, "Recite." "I cannot recite," he (Muhammad [pbuh]) said. The Prophet [pbuh] described: "Then he took me and squeezed me vehemently and then let me go and repeated the order ‘Recite.’ ‘I cannot recite’ said I, and once again he squeezed me and let me till I was exhausted. Then he said: ‘Recite.’ I said ‘I cannot recite.’ He squeezed me for a third time and then let me go and said:
"Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! and your Lord is the Most Generous.’" [Al-Qur'an 96:1-3]
The Prophet [pbuh] repeated these verses. He was trembling with fear. At this stage, he came back to his wife Khadijah, and said, "Cover me, ... cover me." They covered him until he restored security. He apprised Khadijah of the incident of the cave and added that he was horrified. His wife tried to soothe him and reassured him saying, "Allâh will never disgrace you. You unite uterine relations; you bear the burden of the weak; you help the poor and the needy, you entertain the guests and endure hardships in the path of truthfulness."

She set out with the Prophet [pbuh] to her cousin Waraqa bin Nawfal bin Asad bin ‘Abd Al-‘Uzza, who had embraced Christianity in the pre-Islamic period, and used to write the Bible in Hebrew. He was a blind old man. Khadijah said: "My cousin! Listen to your nephew!" Waraqa said: "O my nephew! What did you see?" The Messenger of Allâh [pbuh] told him what had happened to him. Waraqa replied: "This is ‘Namus’ i.e. (the angel who is entrusted with Divine Secrets) that Allâh sent to Moses. I wish I were younger. I wish I could live up to the time when your people would turn you out." Muhammad [pbuh] asked: "Will they drive me out?" Waraqa answered in the affirmative and said: "Anyone who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should be alive till that day, then I would support you strongly." A few days later Waraqa died and the revelation also subsided. [Bukhari 1/2,3]

Further information about how the Prophet (pbuh) received revelation is mentioned in authentic narrations, for example:
Volumn 001, Book 001, Hadith Number 002.
-----------------------------------------
Narated By 'Aisha : (The mother of the faithful believers) Al-Harith bin Hisham asked Allah's Apostle "O Allah's Apostle! How is the Divine Inspiration revealed to you?" Allah's Apostle replied, "Sometimes it is (revealed) like the ringing of a bell, this form of Inspiration is the hardest of all and then this state passes ' off after I have grasped what is inspired. Sometimes the Angel comes in the form of a man and talks to me and I grasp whatever he says." 'Aisha added: Verily I saw the Prophet being inspired Divinely on a very cold day and noticed the Sweat dropping from his forehead (as the Inspiration was over).

Book of Revelation, Kitab Sahih Bukhari
It has also been mentioned in authentic narrations that when the revelation descended upon the Prophet (pbuh), his face became slightly pale. Also, the Prophet (pbuh) would lower his head during the inspiration process and the Companions, due to their love for the Prophet (pbuh), would also lower their heads until the revelation had ended.

We can therefore note the stark contrast between the description you have read and that which is commonly found in authentic accounts of the revelation process. There is no mention whatsoever of disrespectful and unseemly descriptions of "drunkard behaviour", "snorting" or "foaming at the mouth".
