His real name was Shaybah bin Hashim. His father died even before his birth. So a person named Muttalib raised him which is why he was called 'Abdul Muttalib' (slave of Muttalib).

Now you have to tell me who was this person called Muttalib?

No, it's not the reason of him being called Abdulmuttalib.

Since he was born in madina so none of madina dwellers had ever seen him. When his uncle muttalib was bringing him back to madina, people assumed him as new bought slave of muttalib. So began to call him Abdul Muttalib and this news spread far and wide in/around madina that muttalib had bought a handsome slave. However, later on muttalib informed them that he was his nephew, the son of his late brother, hashim. But this appellation became more popular than his real name.

He was born in Madina so why wasn't he seen by Madina dwellers?

Oh..! My mistake, it's makka dwellers instead of madina dwellers. He was brought from madina to makka by his uncle muttalib
