muslim inventions

yes many things

Civilisation, and editor of the book told CNN.“1001 Inventions” is now an exhibition at London’s Science Museum. Hassani hopes the exhibition will highlight the contributions of non-Western cultures — like the Muslim empire that once covered Spain and Portugal, Southern Italy and stretched as far as parts of China — to present day civilization.
Here Hassani shares his top 10 outstanding Muslim inventions:
1. Surgery
Around the year 1,000, the celebrated doctor Al Zahrawi published a 1,500 page illustrated encyclopedia of surgery that was used in Europe as a medical reference for the next 500 years. Among his many inventions, Zahrawi discovered the use of dissolving cat gut to stitch wounds — beforehand a second surgery had to be performed to remove sutures. He also reportedly performed the first caesarean operation and created the first pair of forceps.
2. Coffee
Now the Western world’s drink du jour, coffee was first brewed in Yemen around the 9th century. In its earliest days, coffee helped Sufis stay up during late nights of devotion. Later brought to Cairo by a group of students, the coffee buzz soon caught on around the empire. By the 13th century it reached Turkey, but not until the 16th century did the beans start boiling in Europe, brought to Italy by a Venetian trader.
3. Flying machine
“Abbas ibn Firnas was the first person to make a real attempt to construct a flying machine and fly,” said Hassani. In the 9th century he designed a winged apparatus, roughly resembling a bird costume. In his most famous trial near Cordoba in Spain, Firnas flew upward for a few moments, before falling to the ground and partially breaking his back. His designs would undoubtedly have been an inspiration for famed Italian artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci’s hundreds of years later, said Hassani.
4. University
In 859 a young princess named Fatima al-Firhi founded the first degree-granting university in Fez, Morocco. Her sister Miriam founded an adjacent mosque and together the complex became the al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University. Still operating almost 1,200 years later, Hassani says he hopes the center will remind people that learning is at the core of the Islamic tradition and that the story of the al-Firhi sisters will inspire young Muslim women around the world today.
5. Algebra
The word algebra comes from the title of a Persian mathematician’s famous 9th century treatise “Kitab al-Jabr Wa l-Mugabala” which translates roughly as “The Book of Reasoning and Balancing.” Built on the roots of Greek and Hindu systems, the new algebraic order was a unifying system for rational numbers, irrational numbers and geometrical magnitudes. The same mathematician, Al-Khwarizmi, was also the first to introduce the concept of raising a number to a power.
6. Optics
“Many of the most important advances in the study of optics come from the Muslim world,” says Hassani. Around the year 1000 Ibn al-Haitham proved that humans see objects by light reflecting off of them and entering the eye, dismissing Euclid and Ptolemy’s theories that light was emitted from the eye itself. This great Muslim physicist also discovered the camera obscura phenomenon, which explains how the eye sees images upright due to the connection between the optic nerve and the brain.
7. Music
Muslim musicians have had a profound impact on Europe, dating back to Charlemagne tried to compete with the music of Baghdad and Cordoba, according to Hassani. Among many instruments that arrived in Europe through the Middle East are the lute and the rahab, an ancestor of the violin. Modern musical scales are also said to derive from the Arabic alphabet.
8. Toothbrush
According to Hassani, the Prophet Mohammed popularized the use of the first toothbrush in around 600. Using a twig from the Meswak tree, he cleaned his teeth and freshened his breath. Substances similar to Meswak are used in modern toothpaste.
9. The crank
Many of the basics of modern automatics were first put to use in the Muslim world, including the revolutionary crank-connecting rod system. By converting rotary motion to linear motion, the crank enables the lifting of heavy objects with relative ease. This technology, discovered by Al-Jazari in the 12th century, exploded across the globe, leading to everything from the bicycle to the internal combustion engine.
10. Hospitals
“Hospitals as we know them today, with wards and teaching centers, come from 9th century Egypt,” explained Hassani. The first such medical center was the Ahmad ibn Tulun Hospital, founded in 872 in Cairo. Tulun hospital provided free care for anyone who needed it — a policy based on the Muslim tradition of caring for all who are sick. From Cairo, such hospitals spread around the Muslim world.

Re: muslim inventions

Many Non Muslims I talk to think Islam is wrong to punish Adultery with death but Adultery in my view needs to be punished since it destroys the institution of marriage
many Christians in the U.S. say Homosexual Marriage would destroy the institution of marriage while I agree that Homosexual Marriage would destroy the institution of marriage
I think Adultery also hurts and harms society destroys Marriages and destroys the institution of marriage does anyone agree with me ?

^^^ Islam has the same opinion as yours which is why death is the punishment of zina. "Non-Muslims" consider the punishment to be too brutal only because they commit it openly and have very little or negligible respect for marriage and lineage.

Remember that the death punishment only applies to those who have been married, whose case have been brought to shariah court, and who already fulfill strict critera (eg. four live witnesses of intercourse).
The laws of moses (pbuh) and the prophets also prescribe the same punishment, by the way

By the way, does the mahram have to be a man? Can the mother of the woman accompany her to meet a potential husband? In the Muslim world where Baba and Yama are held in very high regard, the man won't try anything funny if his possible bride's mother is around.

I have heard from Muslims that the Prophet Muhammad being unlettered means that the Holy Quran is a miracle from God something about the Arabic text can anyone explain the reasons as to why this alone makes Quran a miracle ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quran_and_miracles

The prophet probably did know how to read and write, remember that he was a merchant and a very successful one at that. Basic things like bookkeeping and reading/writing contracts are essential parts of trading

The Qur'an is not strictly a miracle, the prophet never used miracles to call people to Islam, rather the arguments and reasoning in the Qur'an as well as its beautiful verses -in Arabic- were what drew followers to him.

Do you have evidence for this statement or only supposition based on your knowledge of modern business that you erroneously apply 1400 years ago.

Do you deny that the Quran is literally the Word of Allah and that every letter of it was miraculously and supernaturally conveyed to Prophet Muhammad (saaws)?

:sl:

Prophet Muhammed pbuh was indeed unlettered . When Angel visited him and asked to read , his reply was : I can not read. There are authentic hadith about this incident.

Also , there are enough proof in holy Quran that supports it .

He it is Who sent among the unlettered ones a Messenger (Muhammad SAW) from among themselves, reciting to them His Verses, purifying them (from the filth of disbelief and polytheism), and teaching them the Book (this Quran, Islamic laws and Islamic jurisprudence) and Al-Hikmah (As-Sunnah: legal ways, orders, acts of worship, etc. of Prophet Muhammad SAW). And verily, they had been before in mainfest error;
( سورة الجمعة , Al-Jumua, Chapter #62, Verse #2)

“Those who follow the apostle, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in their own (scriptures),- in the law and the Gospel;- for he commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good (and pure) and prohibits them from what is bad (and impure); He releases them from their heavy burdens and from the yokes that are upon them. So it is those who believe in him, honour him, help him, and follow the light which is sent down with him,- it is they who will prosper.”

4 : 157 (Yusuf Ali)

Qura'an As mother of all Miracles

Dr. Kamil Kayejo Oloso

The Prophet (peace be on him) said, "Every Prophet was given miracles because of which people believed but what I have been given is the Divine inspiration which has been revealed to me. So, I hope that my followers will out-number the followers of the other Prophets on the Day of Resurrection.'

In fact, in answer to those who were asking Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) for a miracle. Allah asked him to answer them as follows:

"Is it not enough for them that we have sent down to you (O Muhammad) the book (Qur'an), which is rehearsed to them. Verily in it is a mercy and reminder to those who believe.’

As proof of Divine and miraculous nature of the Holy Qur’aan, two arguments are advanced by Allah Himself:

* the fact that the Prophet was unlettered

‘Those who followed the Messengers, the Prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e. Muhammad) they find written in the Torah and the Injil (Gospel).’

* The testimony of the Qur’aan to the effect that Muhammad (peace be on him) could never have composed the contents of the Holy Qur'an; he could not have been its author:

"Neither did you (O Muhammad) read any book before it (the Qur'an) nor did you write (any book) with your right hand, in that case the followers of falsehood might have doubted."

Assalamu alaikum, ukhti, I agree 100% with what you wrote. Isn't it a fundamental article of faith to believe that the Quran is the literal Word of Allah (swt) and to believe otherwise basically puts one outside the realm of Islam?

Do you have evidence for this statement or only supposition based on your knowledge of modern business that you erroneously apply 1400 years ago.

That's why I said 'probably'

as for evidence in general see Bukhari 5345:

-----
It is related that Ibn 'Abbas said:
"When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was dying, there were some men in the house which included 'Umar ibn al-Khattab. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Come. Let me write a document for you after which you will never go astray.'

'Umar said, 'The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is overcome by pain. We have the Qur'an and the Book of Allah is enough for us.' The people in the house disagreed and quarreled. Some of them said, 'Go near so that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, can write a document for you after which you will never go astray.' Others said what 'Umar said. When there was a lot of noise and disagreement in the presence of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Leave me!'"

'Ubaydullah said, "Ibn 'Abbas used to say, 'It was a disaster, a complete disaster, that prevented the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, from writing down that document for them because of their disagreement and noise."
-----

Notice here that when 'Umar objected he did so on grounds that the document was unnecessary since the Muslims already had the Qur'an etc, if the prophet didn't know how to read/write shouldn't 'Umar have said that instead of going to the trouble of explaining why it was unnecessary?

Also notice that Ibn 'Abbas explicitly mentions that the prophet would have written the document down himself had he not been prevented.

Do you deny that the Quran is literally the Word of Allah and that every letter of it was miraculously and supernaturally conveyed to Prophet Muhammad (saaws)?

No I don't, where did you get that idea from?
Now I ask you this: Did the early believers accept Islam because the Qur'an was a 'miracle' or because they were moved by it's sublime language and convinced by the arguments it brought forth?

Let me ask you again: where in the Qur'an itself do we find it calling itself 'miracle'? where do we find the prophet calling the Qur'an a 'miracle'?

Saying it's a miracle suggests something like the staff of Moses which it is not, I object to the label 'miracle' because there is a nuance which is entirely missed if we call it that

Instead let's call it what it calls itself:
(3:138) A plain statement to men, a guidance and instruction to those who fear God.

I am sorry but you have lost me there somewhere. Please give YOUR definition of a miracle so that I can get a better idea of what you are talking about.
