:sl:

^ Ah, Akbari and Asghari, that brings back memories. For our A-level we read a different book by deputy Nazeer Ahmad, called Taubatun Nasooh (The repentance of Nasooh). It has some quite hard and archaic Urdu words in it. The original book on the Urdu A-level syllabus was Umrao Jaan Adaa, a story of prostitution, music, dancing, affairs, etc - we weren't even reading stories of such a bad nature for English Literature, so my parents took it up with school, and alhamdulillah managed to get it changed, and it was replaced by Taubatun Nasooh.

The much abbreviated plot: Nasooh is a well to do man in 18th/19th century India. Engrossed in the life of this world, it's pastimes and luxuries. They're Muslims by name and culture, but little else. There's a cholera oubreak, and Nasooh falls victim. He falls unconscious, and in that state, he has a dream. In the dream, it is the Day of Judgement, and he is standing before Allah, in His court, about to be questioned. The dream has a profound impact on him, and when he wakes up, he realises the error of his ways, and starts to become a proper Muslim. Some of his family mock him at first. The rest of the book is about his efforts to reform his wayward family: wife, daughters and sons, and their attitudes towards him. One son in particular, is particularly stubborn.

I liked the book, because it does have good lessons, for this world and the next, and I also like the title because it reminds me of this ayah:

"O you who believe, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow [on] the Day when Allah will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him. Their light will proceed before them and on their right; they will say, "Our Lord, perfect for us our light and forgive us. Indeed, You are over all things competent." (Surah at-Tahrim, 66:8)

MASHALLAH your parents did great thing...
the selection of stories in syllabus impacts the students character. they remmber it all their lives. parents should keep them self aware of what schools are teaching to their children..
(laikin ajkal to mamla hi ulat hay. waldain bachon ko school bhaij ker u mutmain ho jatay hain jaisay ab un per say bachon ki taleem ki zimaidaree he khatam.. jo kerna hay school walon nay kerna hay.)

Here are some lines I heard of an introduction to the city of Lucknow;
