What happens when we die.

Assalam walaikum.

I've had two deaths in my family this month, inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon...

When we die, does our soul leave our body straight away?

Or does our physical self just expire and our soul remains in our body until we are buried?

Is there a time gap between us dying and the three questions being asked?

Is there a time gap between us dying and us entering barzakh.

Is there a time gap between us dying and having our ribs compressed or attacked by snakes in the grave if we are sentanced to that kind of punishment?

Once soul enters barzakh do we stay there until we are called for on the day of resurrection (judgement day)?

It just got me thinking of what happens in what order and at what time.

I'm guessing all those who have passed since the beginning of humanity are stuck in barzakh awaiting their resurrection which could be a long long time away.

Some minor signs are there but not all, hence why I think it's a long way away but Allahu Aalaam

Do correct me if any of my assumptions are wrong, I am trying to get a better understanding of my faith, sunnah and what I should be prepared for insh Allah in regards to the subject of 'Death'.

Are there any strong hadeeth which answers the above questions or outlines what exactly happens after we expire from the moment of our last breath to the final moment (day of Kiyamah as we enter through to the gates of jannah insh Allah) which determines which gate we enter through for the life in the hereafter I.e judgement day.

Imam Ahmad (17803) narrated that al-Bara’ ibn ‘Aazib (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“Verily, when the believing slave is about to depart this world and enter the Hereafter, there come down to him angels from heaven with white faces, as if their faces are the sun. They bring with them one of the shrouds of Paradise and some of the perfume of Paradise. They sit with him as far as the eye can see. Then the Angel of Death (peace be upon him) comes to him and sits by his head and says, ‘O pure soul, come out to the forgiveness and pleasure of Allah.’ Then his soul comes flowing out like a drop of water flowing from a cup. Then he takes the soul, and no sooner does he seize it but they take it and place it in that shroud and perfume. Then out of it comes the most excellent fragrance of musk to be found on the face of the earth. Then they ascend with it and they do not pass by any group of angels but the angels ask, ‘Who is this pure soul?’ and they reply, ‘It is So and so the son of So and so’ – using the best names by which he was known on earth. Then they bring it to the lowest heaven, and ask for it to be opened, and it is opened for him. Those who are of high rank in each heaven accompany it until they approach the next heaven, and so it goes until it reaches the seventh heaven. Then Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, says: ‘Record the book of My slave in ‘Illiyoon (the highest heaven) and take him back to the earth, for I created them from it, and I shall return them to it, then I shall take them out from it again.’ Then his soul is returned to his body and two angels come and make him sit up”

Then the hadith mentions the questioning in the grave, then it mentions how the soul of the disbeliever is taken, then it says:

“Then they ascend with it and they do not pass by any group of angels but the angels ask, ‘Who is this evil soul?’ and they reply, ‘It is So and so the son of So and so’ – using the worst names by which he was known on earth. Then they bring it to the lowest heaven, and ask for it to be opened, and it is not opened for him.” Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited (interpretation of the meaning): “… For them the gates of heaven will not be opened, and they will not enter Paradise until the camel goes through the eye of the needle” [al-A’raaf 7:40]. Then he said, “Then Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, says: ‘Record the book of My slave in Sijjeen (the lowest Hell) in the lowest earth. Then his soul is cast down.” Then he recited (interpretation of the meaning): “… and whoever assigns partners to Allah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky, and the birds had snatched him, or the wind had thrown him to a far off place.” [al-Hajj 22:31]. He said, “Then his soul is returned to his body and two angels come and make him sit up” Then it mentions the questioning in the grave.

Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami‘ (1676)

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

This hadith indicates that the soul will remain after it departs the body, contrary to the misguided teachings of the mutakallimeen (Muslim philosophers); and that it will ascend and descend, contrary to the misguided teachings of the philosophers; and that it will be returned to the body; and that the deceased will be questioned, then he will be subjected to bliss or punishment.

End quote from Majmoo‘ al-Fataawa (4/292)

Ibn Maajah (4262) narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said:

“Angels come to the dying person and if the man was righteous, they say: ‘Come out, O good soul that was in a good body, come out praiseworthy and receive the glad tidings of mercy and fragrance and a Lord Who is not angry.’ And this is repeated until it comes out, then it is taken up to heaven, and it is opened for it, and it is asked, ‘Who is this?’ They say: ‘[It is] So and so.’ It is said: ‘Welcome to the good soul that was in a good body. Enter praiseworthy and receive the glad tidings of mercy and fragrance and a Lord Who is not angry.’ And this is repeated until it is brought to the heaven above which is Allah, may He be glorified and exalted. But if the man was evil, they say: ‘Come out O evil soul that was in an evil body. Come out blameworthy and receive the tidings of boiling water and dirty wound discharges, and other torments of similar kind, all together [cf. Saad 38:58]. And this is repeated until it comes out, then it is taken up to heaven and it is not opened for it. And it is said: ‘No welcome to the evil soul that was in an evil body. Go back blameworthy, for the gates of heaven will not be opened to you.’ So it is sent back down from heaven, then it goes to the grave.”

Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah.

Then Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, says: “‘Record the book of My slave in ‘Illiyoon (the highest heaven) and take him back to the earth.” So the soul is returned to the body in which it was, then the individual is questioned in the grave; Allah makes him steadfast at the time of questioning, and makes his grave spacious for him, as far as his eyes can see.

But if it is the soul of a disbeliever, then the angels give him the tidings of hell and divine wrath, then they take his soul up, cursed, humiliated and afraid, and the gates of heaven are not opened for it, then it is thrown back down to earth, then it is returned to its body, then the individual is tormented in his grave and it is compressed on him, and there comes to him the heat and smoke of Hell.

Can I get some clarification on

“‘Record the book of My slave in ‘Illiyoon (the highest heaven) and take him back to the earth.”
I know that even after the death of people, the recording of their good deeds doesn't stop, example, recurring charity, prayers of pious children and passing down knowledge. My question is, even after death, the book remains open. Unless that narration is referring to a different book?

Have I missed something here or have i got it wrong? Clarification would be appreciated. Jazak Allah.

All deeds are finished except the sadqa jariah. So deeds that continue after ones death. Sadqa jariah. Which deeds that still continue to benefit others and prayers of relatives

The Record Book of the Righteous and Their Reward

Allah says that truly,

كَلَّ إِنَّ كِتَابَ الاَْبْرَارِ


Verily, the Record of Al-Abrar (the righteous believers)

These people are in a situation that is the opposite of the wicked people.

لَفِي عِلِّيِّينَ



is in `Illiyyin.

meaning, their final destination is `Illiyyin, which is the opposite of Sijjin.

It has been reported from Hilal bin Yasaf that Ibn Abbas asked Ka`b about Sijjin while he was present, and Ka`b said,
"It is the seventh earth and in it are the souls of the disbelievers."

Then Ibn `Abbas asked him about `Illiyyin, so he said,

"It is the seventh heaven and it contains the souls of the believers."

This statement -- that it is the seventh heaven -- has been said by others as well.

Ali bin Abi Talhah reported that Ibn `Abbas said concerning Allah's statement,
كَلَّ إِنَّ كِتَـبَ الاٌّبْرَارِ لَفِى عِلِّيِّينَ
(Nay! Verily, the Record of Al-Abrar (the righteous believers) is in `Illiyyin.)

"This means Paradise."

Others besides him have said,

"`Iliyyin is located at Sidrat Al-Muntaha."

The obvious meaning is that the word `Illiyyin is taken from the word `Uluw, which means highness. The more something ascends and rises, the more it becomes greater and increases.

Thus, Allah magnifies its affair and extols its matter by saying,

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ

I have watched that video several times (being narrated by the voice of 'Shaykh Hasan Ali', who is well known in the UK, based in London), I know about Illiy'een and Sijj'een.

Forgive me, I am someone who takes things literally sometimes and sometimes can come across a bit meticulous in realising even the smallest details. I am trying to make sense of the narration part : “‘Record the book of My slave in ‘Illiyoon (the highest heaven) and take him back to the earth.”

Literally after our death, Allah swt instructs the angels (for the believers) to deposit our book of deeds in Illiy'een in preparation for when we come to cross the the bridge of Seerat/ on the day of judgement / Yawmal Kiyamah. Then we are returned to our grave to await said event.
That is my take on it, is it correct?

While we lay in our grave, our 'afterlife' deeds are still being recorded and appended in our book of deeds, even though it is stored in Illiy-een in ready-ness for judgement day.

Assuming we all end up being taken to Illy-een insh Allah.

Wa'alaykumussalaam. It is not a different book. It's the record of deeds.

What we have put forth and what we have left behind (including ongoing good deeds and bad deeds), will be recorded.

Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
"When a person dies, his deeds are discontinued except for three: Continuing charity, knowledge that others benefited from, and a righteous son who supplicates for him." (At-Tirmidhi)

Indeed, it is We who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and what they left behind, and all things We have enumerated in a clear register. (Yasin 12)

Then each of us will receive our record of deeds on the Day of Judgement.

And [for] every person We have imposed his fate upon his neck, and We will produce for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will encounter spread open. (Al-Isra 13)

Sadly, sometimes our children will not pray for us after our passing. So many times that is the case. Other times the child will only pray for one parent and not the other. There are no guarantee that your children will pray for you at all . Sad but true.

Recoding your book in ‘Illiyreen means that your name has been written down among those who will enter jannah. As for as the book of deed is concerned, we will get that on the day of Judgements and in many verses of Quran Allah says that not a single detail of our deeds will be missing from our books. For example, Al-Kahf 18:49
وَوُضِعَ ٱلْكِتَٰبُ فَتَرَى ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ مُشْفِقِينَ مِمَّا فِيهِ وَيَقُولُونَ يَٰوَيْلَتَنَا مَالِ هَٰذَا ٱلْكِتَٰبِ لَا يُغَادِرُ صَغِيرَةً وَلَا كَبِيرَةً إِلَّآ أَحْصَىٰهَاۚ وَوَجَدُوا۟ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ حَاضِرًاۗ وَلَا يَظْلِمُ رَبُّكَ أَحَدًا

And the Book (one's Record) will be placed (in the right hand for a believer in the Oneness of Allah, and in the left hand for a disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah), and you will see the Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, sinners, etc.), fearful of that which is (recorded) therein. They will say: "Woe to us! What sort of Book is this that leaves neither a small thing nor a big thing, but has recorded it with numbers!" And they will find all that they did, placed before them, and your Lord treats no one with injustice.

Be patience, best thing will come from Allah as a blessing. Remember Allah more than before and establish the prayer as much as possible.

It is a part of al-ghaib, so no one knows.. and no one knows how angels and jinn look like, no one knows how paradise and hell look like, no one knows who dabbat al-ard look like or the events in the judgement day etc
