Subhanallah! Who cares whats on T.V. Sorry to be hursh but TV is a waste of time. A lil shaydan machine sitting in our home's!!!

Hmm.. i dnt watch TV .. However it does it have its own advantages and Disadvantages .. but at the end of the day its a Big Shaytan Preventing Angels from cumin in that room ..

Sisters, people are at different levels of faith or imaan. If you sisters are at that level where you can live without watching tv then good on you! That's great! That's no problem for you. However, other people aren't at that level and as long as what they are watching is appropriate then they are not sinful at least. :) That you already know. :)

One needs to ask themselves what do i need the TV for?

New's is it? Why not listen to the radio beacuse at least you can move around and do other things when listening to it. But the T.V you would have to sit there and then when the news finishes there be another program on and after that another and so on and so on. Is is called a waste of time. If you find yourself watching football, eastendersor whatever its called it means that you got time to spare. Time is everything.

The Prophet peace be upon him said take care of 5 things before 5 things. One of which is your FRRE TIME before your preoccupied. Walaahi oneday you'd relise why on earth did i waste my time. If not in this dunya (this world) then surely you'd in akhira (next world).

Brother Osman yes indeed ppl are of different levels. I agree but they should relies the effect of TV. And then slowly with the help of Allah make changes like watch one 1 hour of TV a day etc.

What about our beloved Islam Channel? Indeed one does need to ask themselves what they need it for but we can have some enjoyment to a certain degree. If we get carried away with it then that is just a very bad character flaw. Yeah, just their favourite programme that will do. Mine is Charmed. Thats the only thing I watch every Thursday. But one thing, we should never miss our Namaz and our religious duties. We can be stronger than Shaytaan.

TV cant be all bad. Just like internet you can control what you watch. We all waste so much time on the net. Do you not log on?? Isnt waste of time?

There are eductaional programmes and informative programmes where we as muslims should be aware of what is going around the world. Now the programme about the hijabi sisters in France is quite good one. We need to be aware about their struggles. YOu really cant say that is a bad thing.

As long as we keep our religious duty and watch beneficial and informative programes, i dont see a problem with it.

Brother if what your watching is benifitting you then alhmdulilaah, i got no problems with it. However if it's not benifitting you then why watch it.

Yes Islam allows enjoyment alhmdulilaah but halaal enjoyment. Most of the things you find in T.V is full of fitnah after fitnah.
 
Brother and sister i didn't say all T.V is bad. If what your watching is of benifit to you then alhmdulilaah.

I don't know if you went to the talk's at Al-Huda Masjid Yesterday but in conclusion like the speaker there said whatever is going on in the world you don't need the TV to find out.

About internet if you want to bring it in the discussion then i couldn't agree with you more. You got to watch what you do with it.

Yes, I agree with you sister. :) But I thought surely not everything you do in this world must be beneficial, no? Tv is definitely full of fitnah but if there is an appropriate program or show that you enjoy then there can't be much wrong with that. As long as it is kept to a certain limit i.e. only one or maybe two programs. You don't gain anything out of it other than relaxation and perhaps comedy or something like that. It may not benefit you in the hereafter but at least you can gain some enjoyment and relaxation. But as you said, the television should be mainly used for things that will benefit you i.e. the news, Islam Channel e.t.c. which will increase your knowledge of this world and the hereafter. "Those who were blind in this world will be blind in the hereafter". Certainly. All I'm saying is that if you find an appropriate program that you particularly enjoy watching then there comes no harm in watching that so long as it does not interfere with your religious duties. What say ye? :)

Answer :

Praise be to Allaah.

Watching TV is very dangerous, and I advise you not to watch it and not to sit in front of it as far as possible. But if the viewer has the moral strength to benefit from what is good, and that will not lead him into evil, then there is nothing to prevent him from that, if he knows that he has that moral strength. If he can listen to something good and benefit from it, and keep away from evil things such as songs and objectionable dramas and other harmful things, then there is nothing wrong with that. But usually the one thing leads to the other, so I advise people not to bring the TV into the home and not to watch it, because one thing leads to another, and because people are inclined to watch weird things if they are in front of them. It is not like listening; listening is less dangerous, but watching and listening may be more attractive and more addictive to people.

More evil than that are videos, if they contain depraved films and are circulated among people – we seek refuge with Allaah. These depraved video movies are more evil, and we must beware of them. The wise person, if he finds anything of that nature, must destroy it or record something over it in order to remove the evil. If possible, he should record something useful over it, so as to remove the evil thing and so that some benefit may be gained from the tape on which something good has been recorded.

Even more evil are satellite dishes. We must beware of them and not install them in our homes. May Allaah keep the Muslims safe from all evil.

Is watching TV permitted in Islaam ? If so under what coditions ?

Answer :

Praise be to Allaah.

The issue of watching films is not free from numerous reservations from a shar’i point of view, such as uncovering ‘awraat, listening to music, spreading corrupt beliefs and calling for imitation of the kuffaar. Allaah has commanded us to lower our gaze, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts). That is purer for them. Verily, Allâh is All-Aware of what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts)” [al-Noor 24:30-31].

Since lowering the gaze is the basis of protecting the private parts, it is mentioned first. Allaah has made the eyes the reflection of the heart: if a person lowers his gaze, the desire in his heart will be reduced, but if a person looks and stares, the desire in his heart will be provoked.

In Saheeh Muslim (1218) it is reported that Al-Fadl ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) was riding behind the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr) from Muzdalifah to Mina, when some women riding on camel-borne sedan chairs passed by. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) turned his [al-Fadl’s] head away. This was prevention and denunciation through action, for if looking were permissible he would have approved of what he did.

In Saheeh al-Bukhaari (6343) it is reported that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Every son of Adam has his share of zinaa decreed for him, and he will undoubtedly get his share. The eye commits zinaa and its zinaa is looking. The tongue commits zinaa and its zinaa is speaking; the feet commit zinaa and their zinaa is walking; the hands commit zinaa and their zinaa is touching. The heart longs and desires for something and the private parts confirm that or deny it.”

He began by mentioning the eye because this is how the zinaa of the hand, foot, heart and private parts begins. By mentioning the zinaa of the tongue, he pointed out that the mouth can commit zinaa by speaking. And he stated that the private parts can confirm that if they make the deed happen, or deny it if that does not happen.

This hadeeth gives the clearest indication that the eye can sin by looking and that this is its zinaa. This is a refutation to those who say that looking is allowed in all circumstances.

It was also reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “O ‘Ali, do not follow a look with a second, for the first look is allowable but not the second.”

A look has the same effect on the heart as an arrow has on its victim. If it does not kill him, it will wound him. It is like a spark of fire in dried grass; if it does not burn all of it, it will still burn some of it. May Allaah have mercy on the one who said:

“Everything starts with a look, and big fires start from little sparks.

How often has a heart been dealt a fatal blow like that of an arrow, with no need for a bow.

As long as a man’s eyes are looking around, looking into the eyes of others, he is in a state of danger.

His eye delights in that which could destroy his heart. The joy that may lead to harm is not welcome.”

Hence Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Fataawa 3/227:

With regard to television, it is a dangerous device and its harmful effects are very great, like those of the cinema, or even worse. We know from the research that has been written about it and from the words of experts in Arab countries and elsewhere enough to indicate that it is dangerous and very harmful to Islamic beliefs (‘aqeedah), morals and the state of society. This is because it includes the presentation of bad morals, tempting scenes, immoral pictures, semi-nakedness, destructive speech, and Kufr. It encourages imitation of their conduct and ways of dressing, respect for their leaders, neglect of Islamic conduct and ways of dressing, and looking down on the scholars and heroes of Islam. It damages their image by portraying them in an off-putting manner that makes people despise them and ignore them. It shows people how to cheat, steal, hatch plots and commit acts of violence against others. Undoubtedly anything that produces so many bad results should be stopped and shunned, and we have to close all the doors that could lead to it. If some of our brothers denounce it and speak out against it, we cannot blame them, because this is a part of sincerity towards Allaah and towards other people.

Whoever thinks that this device (TV) can be free of these evils and can be used only for good purposes if it is censored properly is exaggerating and is making a big mistake, because the censor may miss things and most people nowadays want to imitate the foreigners. It is very rare to find censors who are doing their job properly, especially nowadays when most people are only interested in time-wasting entertainment and things that turn people away from true guidance. Reality bears witness to that.

We ask Allaah to keep us safe from all evil for He is the Most Generous.

I actually agree with Sis proudmuslimah. If i could stop watching TV, i really would. May Allah help me stop watch TV..at least the rubbish programmes. aameen.

Sis it's quite simple and easy to stop TV.

First limite the time you watch T.V that means cutting down so some programs

Secondly since your wonna limite your time you have to find something to busy yourself with e.g read a book, go masjid, read QURAN

Contiue with this Insha Allah

But i'm telling you this you can not stop watching T.V untill you put in the bin. Get it out of your house Insha Allah.

I just wrote a practise gcse question about this last week!!!!!! :)

we had to analyse the pros and cons about tv. It was reli intresting actually.

Some of The pros were mainly things like;
used for entertainment,
its good if your watching documentarys etc :)


But the cons were :
source of procrastination- (that used to apply with me), It tantalizing to think how much time do we actually waste on t.v when we could be doing something more productive???? :-[
Addictive- Once you start watching something you tell yourself you NEED to watch the rest of it.
Bad habits are picked up- These could swearing, drug use or even small things like being rude to your elders, parents.

and scientifically while watching the television, carbon is emitted into the atmosphere which isnt good for you. :)

Overall its all about intentions. If your using the t.v purely to gain knowledge its ok. :thumbs_up
But getting hooked on soaps is a waste of time! :thumbs_do
