And I luv the name Safoora for girls. :D

Assalamu Alaykum,
I agree with those who posted the names of the Prophets. masha'Allah they are very beautiful.
I also like the names of many of the companions. Khalid, Umar, Uthman, Ali, etc.

maybe it would be interesting to discuss which names you guys feel are encouraged and which aren't.

For example, I remember Azhar Usman (comedian) joking about if someone named Christian (a common western name) becomes muslim. Assalamu Alaykum, Br. Christian! Sounds weird.

What about selecting names that belong to Angels (eg. Mika'il)? Or places (eg. Safa, Marwa, Kaaba, etc.)?

:sl:

Hmm..is the name Christian even allowed when reverts revert...? :/ (Just outta curiosity)

I've heard that according to some scholars the names Jibreal and Mika'il mean Abdulllah... Can't find any sources for that now though..

I think they are suitable for names...

Names after places...nah, i don't encourage it. But I've never seen any ahadith that go against it. But I just feel weird calling somebody "Safa" or "Marwa".. And also, I kinda noticed that people who name their children after places, its more of a fad they go through. I prefer the names of the Anbiya and Sahabah cuz it never gets "boring."

I also heard the comedian mention this, however i am not sure whether i agree with him saying they do not need to change there names ones they convert. (Correct me if i am wrong) but is it not true that we have been told to choose a suitable name for ourselves as this is the name we will be called upon on the day of judgement.

yes thats true
its also one of ur rights upon ur parents that they must name u with a nice name

SubhanAlah now we r talkin sum interesting stuff.rather than listing names away ..

YEs .. the parents shud name their children with a nice Name, i have posted somwhere abt keepin Good names under the " BASICS OF ISLAM" board.

http://www.load-islam.com/forums/showthread.php?t=185

It is the duty of parents to give good names. Names speak out that a person is the slave of Allah and emit the fragrance of Islam and belief. The holy prophet Muhammad saw said “Give the names of prophets, the names dearest to Allah are Abdullah, Abdur Rahman and the worst names are Harb and Marrah.

A non-muslim doesn't need to change their name so long as it does not conflict with the nature of Islam. It is nice to take a good name though, which has some Islamic meaning.

Usually, the deciding rule for names is that we examine what kinds of names were present at the time of the salaf.
And we don't name ourselves after angels or other creation, since Allah, Glorified and Exalted, made us humans.
