Re: Pork is Haram

Pigs are omnivores, which means that they consume both plants and small animals. Pigs will scavenge and have been known to eat any kind of food, including dead insects, worms, tree bark, rotting carcasses, excreta (including their own), garbage, and other pigs. In the wild, they are foraging animals, primarily eating leaves and grasses, roots, fruits and flowers. Occasionally, in captivity, pigs may eat their own young, often if they become severely stressed.

Ok if you're going to quote from Wikipedia, at least give Wikipedia credit.

While we're at it, that glorious source of almost-always-accurate information has this to say in addition to the above....

Coprophagous insects consume and redigest the feces of large animals; these feces contain substantial amounts of semi-digested food. (Herbivore digestive systems are especially inefficient.) The most famous feces-eating insect is dung-beetle and the most ubiquitous being the fly.

Pigs are most commonly associated with eating not only their own dung, but those of other animals and humans.

Rabbits, cavies (guinea pigs) and related species do not have the complicated ruminant digestive system. Instead they extract more nutrition from grass by giving their food a second pass through the gut. Soft caecal pellets of partially digested food are excreted and generally consumed immediately. They also produce normal droppings, which are not eaten.

Young elephants, pandas, koalas, and hippos eat the feces of their mother to obtain the necessary bacteria for the proper digestion of the vegetation found on the savannah and in the jungle. When they are born, their intestines do not contain these bacteria (they are completely sterile). Without them, they would be unable to get any nutritional value from plants.

Gorillas eat their own feces and the feces of other gorillas.

Hamsters eat their own droppings; this is thought to be a source of vitamins B and K, produced by bacteria in the gut. Apes have been observed eating horse feces for the salt. Monkeys have been observed to eat elephant feces.

Maybe these other animals & insects should have been mentioned in the Qu'ran too? I wonder why they weren't? or were they?

Re: Pork is Haram

why pork is forbidden:
Forbidden to you are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than God; that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been eaten by a wild animal; unless you are able to slaughter it; that which is sacrificed on stone; also is the division by raffling with arrows: that is impiety. This day have those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not but fear me. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed my favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any is forced by hunger, with no inclination to transgression, God is indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Really? You can't just post a quote? :?

Anyway. About the ^.

I understand why pork is haram, but I try to look at things as being relative.

Pigs being dirty and "disgusting" may have been relevent at the time of Muhammad , but we know so much more now about animals habits and instincts, surely pigs can now be viewed as being intelligent and social as well as sensitive. In fact, all animals have the potential to carry disease and parasites. Don't they?

Humans carry disease and parasites!

Cows, sheep and chickens carry disease and parasites!

Re: Pork is Haram

Maybe these other animals & insects should have been mentioned in the Qu'ran too? I wonder why they weren't? or were they?

How long would the Quran be if it listed every sngle animal as being permissible to eat or not. :uuh:

Anyway, there are many animals we can't eat. If I'm not mistaken, we can't eat animals that are carnivores (someone please correct me if I am wrong). The wiki post mentioned that pigs eat other animals... well I guess that is just one reason why pig can't be eaten.

In Islam we believe that when God forbade something, He has a reason for doing it and that it is better for us. We don't need to know exactly what that advantage is to act upon it though.

There is nothing, as far as I know, that explicitly says "we can't eat pigs because of X, Y, Z". The reasons people come up with are mostly speculative.

Pigs being dirty and "disgusting" may have been relevent at the time of Muhammad , but we know so much more now about animals habits and instincts, surely pigs can now be viewed as being intelligent and social as well as sensitive. In fact, all animals have the potential to carry disease and parasites. Don't they?

Yes, but it seems that pigs are more likely to have parasites than other animals. But it doesn't make a difference anyway. The Quran did not say: 'You can't eat pork because of parasite risks'. It just said we can't eat it. So even if we can guarantee that there are no parasites, we still can't eat it because we don't know if this is why God forbade it.

Re: Pork is Haram

This topic has been discussed many, many, many times here.

The final and deciding reason is because Allah(swt) has forbidden it.

there is an even deeper reason. If you are familiar with pigs, it is impossible to slaughter a grown pig in a halal manner. You can not slaughter a pig in the manner we are taught to slaughter animals that are to be used for food. so even if a pig was the perfect and cleanest food on earth, we still could not eat it for 2 reasons.

1. It can not be slaughtered in a Halal manner

2. Allaah(swt) has forbidden our eating it.

No other reasons or explanations are needed.

Re: Pork is Haram

I've heard that there is harmful bacteria in pigs that cant be destroyed or something.Ive no clue about microbiology or biology for that matter but Ive heard about it somewhere.

Re: Pork is Haram

and I'm wondering why...

I haven't read the Qu'ran in full as of yet and I've read some vague descriptions of why pork is haram.

Im wondering why a creation of Allah, the pig, is haram to consume? Why can't a pig be killed in Halal fashion, similar to chicken and cattle.

Very good and important question, brother.

Here is your answer.

Most Common Questions asked by Non-Muslims

PORK FORBIDDEN

Question:

Why is the eating of pork forbidden in Islam?

Answer:

The fact that consumption of pork is prohibited in Islam is well known. The following points explain various aspects of this prohibition:

1. Pork prohibited in Qur’an

The Qur’an prohibits the consumption of pork in no less than 4 different places. It is prohibited in 2:173, 5:3, 6:145 and 16:115.

"Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah." [Al-Qur’an 5:3]

The above verses of the Holy Qur’an are sufficient to satisfy a Muslim as to why pork is forbidden.

2. Pork prohibited in the Bible

The Christian is likely to be convinced by his religious scriptures. The Bible prohibits the consumption of pork, in the book of Leviticus

"And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you".

"Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are unclean to you."
[Leviticus 11:7-8]

Pork is also prohibited in the Bible in the book of Deuteronomy

"And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you. Ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass."
[Deuteronomy 14:8]

A similar prohibition is repeated in the Bible in the book of Isaiah chapter 65 verse 2-5.

3. Consumption of pork causes several diseases

The other non-Muslims and atheists will agree only if convinced through reason, logic and science. Eating of pork can cause no less than seventy different types of diseases. A person can have various helminthes like roundworm, pinworm, hookworm, etc. One of the most dangerous is Taenia Solium, which is in lay man’s terminology called tapeworm. It harbours in the intestine and is very long. Its ova i.e. eggs, enter the blood stream and can reach almost all the organs of the body. If it enters the brain it can cause memory loss. If it enters the heart it can cause heart attack, if it enters the eye it can cause blindness, if it enters the liver it can cause liver damage. It can damage almost all the organs of the body.

Another dangerous helminthes is Trichura Tichurasis. A common misconception about pork is that if it is cooked well, these ova die. In a research project undertaken in America, it was found that out of twenty-four people suffering from Trichura Tichurasis, twenty two had cooked the pork very well. This indicates that the ova present in the pork do not die under normal cooking temperature.

4. Pork has fat building material

Pork has very little muscle building material and contains excess of fat. This fat gets deposited in the vessels and can cause hypertension and heart attack. It is not surprising that over 50% of Americans suffer from hypertension.

5. Pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth

The pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth. It lives and thrives on muck, faeces and dirt. It is the best scavenger that I know that God has produced. In the villages they don’t have modern toilets and the villagers excrete in the open air. Very often excreta is cleared by pigs.

Some may argue that in advanced countries like Australia, pigs are bred in very clean and hygienic conditions. Even in these hygienic conditions the pigs are kept together in sties. No matter how hard you try to keep them clean they are filthy by nature. They eat and enjoy their own as well as their neighbour’s excreta.

6. Pig is the most shameless animal

The pig is the most shameless animal on the face of the earth. It is the only animal that invites its friends to have sex with its mate. In America, most people consume pork. Many times after dance parties, they have swapping of wives; i.e. many say "you sleep with my wife and I will sleep with your wife." If you eat pigs then you behave like pigs. We Indians look upon America to be very advanced and sophisticated. Whatever they do, we follow after a few years. According to an article in Island magazine, this practice of swapping wives has become common in the affluent circles of Bombay.

Allah (SWT) knows his creation, therefore he forbidden us to eat them.

The reason Allah (SWT) created them is to test us.

I just noticed nobody addressed your second question. "Why can't a pig be killed in Halal fashion, similar to chicken and cattle."

For an animal to be properly slaughtered it is necessary to be able to cut the the animal's throat rapidly and smoothly. It has to be done in a manner that causes the least pain to the animal. The pig has no well defined neck to cut and the carotid arteries and trachea are well protected in a very thick layer of fat making it impossible to cut the carotid arteries rapidly or smoothly. To try to cut the throat of a pig is a very slow process as a considerable amount of tissue has to be cut through before the carotid arteries can be reached. This makes it difficult to slaughter the pig quickly and with minimal pain and the animal will suffer considerably as you try to cut it's throat properly. If you ever lived on a farm and had to slaughter a pig, you will know it is the most difficult animal to kill. It is a horrible experience, resulting in a very painful, traumatic death for the pig. Most farmers of today rely on the shooting of the pig, even that is not rapid as it quite often requires several bullets to kill it. shooting the pig is not a halal method of slaughter.

Re: Pork is Haram

Great Facts on Pork

Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah. Following text give you reasons why Allah (SWT) has forbidden eating pork. There are many other reasons which we do not know of but ALLAH (SWT) knows.

"You are what you eat" - Native American proverb

In folklore terms, eating the meat of the pig is said to contribute to lack of morality and shame, plus greed for wealth, laziness, indulgence, dirtiness and gluttony. We insult a person by calling him or her a "Pig" when they demonstrate these characteristics. Muslims are forbidden by God to eat the meat of the pig (pork).

This is detailed in verses 2:173, 5:3, 6:145, and 16:115 of the Qur'an. An exemplary verse is quoted here: "He has only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and any (food) over which the name of other than Allah has been invoked. But if one is forced by necessity, without willful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, then Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

Is Pork Forbidden to Muslims Only?

The Jews and Christians are also forbidden from eating pork. Here is a quote from the Old Testament to that effect: "And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase." Deuteronomy 14:8

Many Christians believe that this verse was directed only at the Jews. But Jesus himself says during the Sermon on the Mount; "Think not that I am come to destroy the Law, or the Prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill." Some Christians say that, after a vision by St. Peter, God cleansed all animals and made them fit and lawful for human consumption. If ALL animals are cleansed by Peter's vision, this includes dogs, cats, vultures, and rats: but you just don't see people getting excited about a cat-meat sandwich like they do over barbecued pork or bacon. Others say that it was Paul who rescinded the law forbidding pork to humans, in order to appease the Romans, who enjoyed the taste of pig-meat. Many excuses have been given, but none are very sound.

Many Far Eastern traditions also discourage the eating of pork. The 3,000 year old Confucian Book of Rites says, "A gentleman does not eat the flesh of pigs and dogs." Although many Chinese are avid eaters of pork today, physicians of ancient China recognized pork-eating as the root of many human ailments. Buddhists, Jains and Hindus usually avoid eating any kind of meat.

Bad effects of pork consumption

Pig's bodies contain many toxins, worms and latent diseases. Although some of these infestations are harbored in other animals, modern veterinarians say that pigs are far more predisposed to these illnesses than other animals. This could be because pigs like to scavenge and will eat any kind of food, including dead insects, worms, rotting carcasses, excreta (including their own), garbage, and other pigs.

Influenza (flu) is one of the most famous illnesses which pigs share with humans. This illness is harbored in the lungs of pigs during the summer months and tends to affect pigs and humans in the cooler months. Sausage contains bits of pigs' lungs, so those who eat pork sausage tend to suffer more during epidemics of influenza. Pig meat contains excessive quantities of histamine and imidazole compounds, which can lead to itching and inflammation; growth hormone, which promotes inflammation and growth; sulphur-containing mesenchymal mucus, which leads to swelling and deposits of mucus in tendons and cartilage, resulting in arthritis, rheumatism, etc.

Sulfur helps cause firm human tendons and ligaments to be replaced by the pig's soft mesenchymal tissues, and degeneration of human cartilage. Eating pork can also lead to gallstones and obesity, probably due to its high cholesterol and saturated fat content. The pig is the main carrier of the taenia solium worm, which is found it its flesh. These tapeworms are found in human intestines with greater frequency in nations where pigs are eaten. This type of tapeworm can pass through the intestines and affect many other organs, and is incurable once it reaches beyond a certain stage. One in six people in the US and Canada has trichinosis from eating trichina worms which are found in pork. Many people have no symptoms to warn them of this, and when they do, they resemble symptoms of many other illnesses. These worms are not noticed during meat inspections, nor are they killed by salting or smoking. Few people cook the meat long enough to kill the trichinae. The rat (another scavenger) also harbors this disease. There are dozens of other worms, germs, diseases and bacteria which are commonly found in pigs, many of which are specific to the pig, or found in greater frequency in pigs.

Pigs are biologically similar to humans, and their meat is said to taste similar to human flesh. Pigs have been used for dissection in biology labs due to the similarity between their organs and human organs. People with insulin-dependent diabetes usually inject themselves with pig insulin.

Kindness to animals

Every creature was created by Allah for a purpose. The Prophet always encouraged being kind to animals. Although we should not eat the meat of the pig, it doesn't mean that we should hate pigs. We should show them the same kindness as any other animal, and not abuse or torture them. Pigs score high on tests devised to determine animal intelligence; in other words, they are very smart. It used to be that Europe people believed that pork would taste better if the pigs were kept in a state of filth, but this is not the natural inclination of the pig. When left to their own devices, it is said that pigs do not like to soil their sleeping quarters. As for their tendency to wallow in mud, that is done mainly to keep cool.

Re: Pork is Haram

Im wondering why a creation of Allah, the pig, is haram to consume?
Actually, snakelegs gave the best answer that it is forbidden directly by Allah (swt) in the Quran. As a Muslim we submit our wills to that of our Creator.

Quran 2:285 The Rasool has believed in the Guidance which has been revealed to him from his Rabb and so do the Believers. They all believe in Allah, His angels, His books and His Rasools. They say we do not discriminate against anyone of His Rasools. And they say: "We hear and we obey. Grant us Your forgiveness, O Rabb; to You we shall all return."

We know why some things are forbidden, but sometimes we just have to "hear and obey".

Most Common Questions asked by Non-Muslims

PORK FORBIDDEN

This is a good point. If, perchance, we address all of the "logical" reasons why we don't eat swine flesh, that still does not make it permissable for us to consume. It certainly does not hurt for us to use our intellect to understand some of the reasons why something is forbidden, but we should not use that same reasoning as an excuse to disobey Allah (swt).

Re: Pork is Haram

Pigs will eat human corpses if they get the opportunity. Which, if humans eat pigs, could give rise to food chains like this:

pig --> human ---> pig ---> human

in fact there was a murder mystery programme on a UK tv channel where this happened, i.e. the murder worked on a pig farm and disposed of the corpse by feeding it to the pigs.

the really worrying thing though is how many people watched that programme and still eat pig

:sl:
I have seen this question pop up a few times in this forum, and a few times elsewhere. The answer to this usually is "It's unhealthy" or "Because Allah has forbidden us to, and we must follow". Ofcourse both of these answers are right, but look what scientists have found:

Stay trim and stop eating bacon, cancer report declares

"A third of cancers are caused by diet and lack of exercise and could be prevented, according to a report which urges people to stay slim and abstain from too much fast food, red meat and preserved meat such as ham and bacon, and alcohol.

The report from the World Cancer Research Fund, which had input from more than 200 scientists and took five years to produce, is the most authoritative overview of the role that food, drink, obesity and exercise play in causing cancer. It concludes that changes in our lifestyle could play almost as big a role as stopping smoking in preserving us from disease and that being fat is a big risk for cancer.

Top of the 10 recommendations for a healthier life in the report is that people should keep their weight down throughout their life.

"The most striking thing to emerge from the report is the importance of overweight and obesity," said Sir Michael Marmot, professor of epidemiology and public health at University College London and chair of the panel which reviewed 7,000 studies on causes of cancer.

Obesity is normally measured by body mass index (BMI) - which is a person's weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. A BMI above 30 is considered obese, while 25-29 is overweight. The WCRF recommends a BMI at the lower end of the healthy range, which is 18.5 to 25.

Excess body fat is not only a trigger for endometrial cancer, but also oesophagus, pancreatic, bowel, post-menopausal breast, and kidney cancers, according to the report. And fat around the abdomen is also linked to bowel cancer. "What we're saying is that young adults should try not to put on weight throughout their adult life. They should stay as lean as possible," said Sir Michael, who said he had himself been "a bit shocked" by this conclusion.

The report has similarly robust recommendations on alcohol, exercise and meat consumption. Everyone should have at least half an hour of exercise a day - but the panel says it should be vigorous, not moderate exercise. If the exercise is moderate, it should last for an hour a day.

The third recommendation is to avoid energy-dense foods, in which, said Sir Michael, they included fast foods which were high in fat and sugar. Sugary drinks were a particular problem, he said, and even fruit juices should not be drunk to excess because of their sugar content. Tea and coffee posed no risk, he added.

Eating mostly plant-based foods, such as fruit and vegetables, reduced cancer risk, but too much red meat raised it. The panel recommended no more than 500g a week. Processed meat - such as the ham and bacon with added preservatives sold in supermarkets - should be avoided altogether, it said, because they raised the cancer risk by around 10%.

Alcohol was a difficult area, Sir Michael said, because it was the only item they looked at which had a beneficial effect in other diseases - small amounts reduce the risk of heart disease. But it raises the risk of six - and possibly seven - different cancers, including mouth, throat and breast cancers. The panel recommends women should not have more than one drink a day and men not more than two.

Sir Michael said the importance of the report was that it looked at the totality of the evidence. "We could be giving grandma's wisdom," he said. "This is a very positive message. What we're saying is that perhaps a third of cancers are diet-related. Cancer is largely preventable. It is a very positive message."

Cancer Research UK welcomed the report. "Small changes can have a big effect on our cancer risk and everyone needs to take action, individuals as well as government," said Lesley Walker, director of cancer information.

But a dissenting voice came from Karol Sikora, professor of cancer medicine and honorary consultant oncologist at Imperial College School of Medicine. "The educational message for the public should be that there are healthy diets and unhealthy diets but we should keep everything in perspective and not suggest rigid avoidance," he said. "Alcohol, red meat and bacon in moderation will do us no harm, and to suggest it will is wrong.""

Allah knows best, eh? :D
Also notice it says alcohol increased the risk of six and possibly seven different cancers? ...And did Allah tell us to avoid that too? Yes he did!

ALLAHU AKBUR!

(I apologize if a thread about this is already present, if there is I am unaware of it.)
