EDDAH — The tallest clock tower in the world is to be built in holy city of Makkah, according to a statement issued by Governor Prince Majed.
When completed, the Makkah clock tower will be the tallest in the world — taller than Warsaw Palace of Culture and Science in Poland, the Big Ben in London, Rajabai Clock Tower in Mumbai, India, and the Allen-Bradley Clock Tower in Milwaukee, United States.
The clock will be placed on the fifth tower of the King Abdulaziz Endowment Project at a height of 380 metres and will be visible from all sides. The name of Allah will be inscribed on each of its four faces.
Two of the clock faces including the inscription will be 80 metres in height and 65 metres in width and the dial will have a diametre of 39 metres. The other two clocks will be 65 metres in height and 43 metres in width while their dial diameter will be 25 metres. Two lifts will take visitors to a balcony with a width of five metres below the clocks.
The landmark edifice will also carry intricate Islamic decorative artwork.
Holy city of Makkah is situated in a valley surrounded by rocky mountains, where people have built homes, besides in the valley itself.
Naturally, there are cliffs and edges that pose a threat to the residents and sometimes boulders get loose and fall below, especially when rains erode these rocks of various sizes, and send them dangerously thundering down. In order to safeguard people who live on the mountains in and around Makkah, the municipal authorities in the holy city have signed a SR21 million deal with a national construction company to build proper steps and install concrete barriers on dangerous edges and cliffs in the mountainous city, according to Ahmad Ali Bayazeed, acting deputy mayor of Holy city of Makkah.
He said that the project is an important one and is being undertaken with a view to protect residents from danger. The Grand Mosque sits in a valley surrounded by mountains on which people live. Bayazeed added that there have been many incidents of people falling off the edge of mountains. "The project will take two-and-a-half years to complete. The municipality has finished erecting barriers in many locations across the city including in the Ajyad, Rhea Bakhsh and Daghsh areas. The municipality is currently working on areas like Talal bin Mansour, Dahla Al-Jin, Malayo, Al-Masafi and others," he added.
