    Dhu'l-Hijjah:

    AsSalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu!

    Tomorrow 15th September marks the 1st of Dhu'l-Hijjah...

    Virtues of the 1st Ten Days of Dhu'l-Hijjah:

    وَالْفَجْرِ
    By the dawn;
    وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ
    By the ten nights.
    (al-Qur'ãn ul-Kareem; 89.1-2)

    Ibn ‘Abbãs (رضي الله عنهما), Ibn az-Zubayr (رضي الله عنه), Mujãhid (رحمه الله) and others of the earlier and later generations said that this refers to the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah. Ibn Kathīr (رحمه الله) said: "This is the correct opinion."
    (Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr, 8/413)

    لِّيَشْهَدُوا مَنَافِعَ لَهُمْ وَيَذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ فِي أَيَّامٍ مَّعْلُومَاتٍ عَلَىٰ مَا رَزَقَهُم مِّن بَهِيمَةِ الْأَنْعَامِ ۖ فَكُلُوا مِنْهَا وَأَطْعِمُوا الْبَائِسَ الْفَقِيرَ

    {That they may witness things that are of benefit to them (i.e. reward of Hajj in the Hereafter, and also some worldly gain from trade, etc.), and mention the Name of Allãh on appointed days, over the beast of cattle that He has provided for them (for sacrifice). Then eat thereof and feed therewith the poor who have a very hard time.}
    (al-Qur'ãn ul-Hakeem; 22.28)

    The majority of scholars agree that the "appointed days" are the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah, because of the words of Ibn ‘Abbãs (رضي الله عنهما): "The ‘appointed days’ are the first ten days (of Dhu’l-Hijjah)."

    The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

    "There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allãh than these ten days." The people asked, "Not even Jihãd for the sake of Allãh?" He said, "Not even Jihãd for the sake of Allãh, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing." [Bukhãrī]

    "There are no days greater in the sight of Allãh and in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Him than these ten days, so during this time recite a great deal of Tahleel ("Lã ilãha ill-Allãh"), Takbeer (Allãhu-Akbar!) and Tahmeed (Al-Hamdulillãh!)."
    [Musnad Ahmad; Ahmad Shãkir (رحمه الله) stated that it is Saheeh]

    ----------------------------------

    "These ten days are better than all the other days of the year, with no exceptions, not even the last ten days of Ramadãn. But the last ten nights of Ramadãn are better, because they include Laylat al-Qadr ("the Night of Power"), which is better than a thousand months. Thus the various reports may be reconciled."
    (See Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr, 5/412)

    Narrated Hunaydah ibn Khãlid (رضي الله عنه):
    "The Prophet (ﷺ) used to fast on the first nine days of Dhu’l-Hijjah..."
    [An-Nasã’ī & Abū Dãwūd; Classed as Sahīh by al-Albãnī (رحمه الله) in Sahīh Abi Dawūd, 2/462]

    For those who intend to fast the next 9 days (prohibited to fast on 'Eid), here are the starting & breaking times for fasting (i.e. Fajr & Maghrib):

    (9th) Weds 23rd Sep:
    Fajr = 05.16am -
    Maghrib (Iftaar) = 19.00pm

    The Prophet (ﷺ) said;
    "Take Suhūr (early morning breakfast before Fajr) as there is a Blessing in it." [Bukhãrī]

    "Whoever revives an aspect of my Sunnah that is forgotten after my death, he will have a reward equivalent to that of the people who follow him, without it detracting in the least from their reward."
    [At-Tirmidhi, 7/443; "This is a Hasan Hadeeth because of corroborating Asãnīd"]

    ۞وَذَكِّرْ فَإِنَّ الذِّكْرَىٰ تَنفَعُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ۞
    [And remind, for verily, reminders profits the Believers.]
    (al-Qur'ãn ul-Majeed; 51.55)
