By Syed Bilal Shafi, Staff Reporter

The Dubai Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department has announced an international research paper competition on Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) to promote a better understanding of Islam.

The research paper should focus on the various ways in which the Prophet has displayed mercy towards others and the kind treatment enjoyed by non-Muslims living under Muslim rule, said the organisers. Competition winners will be awarded prizes of Dh5,000.

The campaign, with the theme Peaceful Living is a Common Goal, was launched on May 20. It aims to promote a better understanding of Islam and to create a platform for constructive dialogue among followers of different faiths.

"In recent years, the image of Islam has been misrepresented in the media as a result of which numerous misconceptions about this beautiful religion prevail. Through this campaign we are trying to emphasise the teachings of Islam are based on justice and compassion towards others," said Eman Esmail Abdullah, campaign manager.

Several posters have been printed to educate Muslims and Non-Muslims about the various aspects of Islam in which the concept of mercy, tolerance and women's rights have been highlighted. A booklet titled Prophet Mohammad: Mercy for the World, which contains many quotes from Western writers, historians and Nobel Prize winners praising the Prophet, has also been published. Abdullah said nearly 100,000 copies of the posters and 50,000 copies of the booklet have already been printed.

Since the launch of the campaign, the Department has hosted many activities and lectures in English and Arabic. According to the campaign manager, around 1,200 children of various nationalities attended seminars and competitions on the Prophet's biography held at Children's City and Hatta, Twar, Safa, Rashidiya and Umm Suqeim public libraries.

During Ramadan, a series of lectures in Arabic, Urdu, and English will be held at the Crown Plaza Hotel.

The manager said in the coming months over 25 lectures and forums about Islam will be held in 11 countries including Australia, Pakistan, Canada, Thailand, Germany, the UK and the US.

After Ramadan, we will also conduct lectures in 96 private schools, she added.

Submissions of the paper can be e-mailed to Rami Killawi on the address: [email protected] or Hafsa Ahmad: [email protected] before November 30.
