    Attitudes to Torture

    Report bad ads?

    Tolerating abuse

Who would accept the torture of others?

OPINIONS on whether the use of torture should be prohibited appear to vary widely around the world. According to opinion polls conducted early in 2008 respondents in western European democracies such as Britain and Spain were most hostile to the idea of even some degree of use of torture, whereas residents in big but poorer countries such as Nigeria, Turkey and India seemed most willing to tolerate the idea (perhaps in these three cases because of violent domestic threats to political stability). Surprisingly, democracies are not necessarily more hostile to the practice than non-democracies. According to the polls, Americans are more willing to tolerate the use of torture than are Chinese.

    Re: Attitudes to Torture

Torture is awful. It should never be used upon suspects. I can't believe anyone would actually support torture.

    It should be banned.

    Re: Attitudes to Torture

I think torture of a proven guilty person, to get more information to maybe save the world is possibly acceptable.

But torturing suspects is plain evil. What happened to innocent until proven guilty?

    Re: Attitudes to Torture

Anyone who says they approve of torture should have to undergo it. If you can withstand it, either you're some sort of sadomasochistic freak or you're Jack Bauer.

According to the polls, Americans are more willing to tolerate the use of torture than are Chinese.
    How ironic.

    Muezzin:-

Not really. Americans are not tortured on a daily basis for ordinary crimes so do not fear it whereas the Chinese use torture on its citizens frequently, even for crimes like fraud.

Obviously the Chinese are far more likely not to tolerate torture as they could find themselves in this situation far more often than an American.

But it is part of the Quran, Sira and ahadith - Mohammed PBUH had the Jewish leader of the Khaybar tribe tortured to find out where the treasure was hidden. And Mohammed is the perfect example of humankind to the muslims - not so?

Course it's ironic - which of those two nations holds itself as a defender and bastion of liberty and justice? According to this poll, which of these nations' people are more tolerant of torture, an act that is a betrayal of liberty and justice?

Unless the reasoning you employed is one of those holier than thou, insane Internet geo-political spiels to the effect of: 'The West is always better than the East, even when it might be worse, for compass points define justice, verily'.

How do you account for the relatively low British tolerance for torture, according to this poll? Do enlighten us to the daily torture suffered by the British on the way to vote for the opposition or buy a loaf of bread.

And, no doubt, according to the illogical reasoning you seem to be using, Egypt has such a high tolerance for tortue because it goes on so often there, everyone is used to it.

Come on. We're all grown-ups here, right?
