The United States has returned 17 men from the Guantanamo Bay military Afghan prisioners released from Guantanamo are handed over during a ceremony at the Afghan Supreme Court in Kabul prison in Cuba to Afghanistan. The group has been turned over to local security officials, who will decide whether to free them or hold them in jail.
Afghan government officials say the 17 men, who arrived in Kabul Tuesday, are already in custody and awaiting a decision on their future.
Interior Ministry spokesman Latufullah Mashal says all correct procedures have been followed.
"These people are handed over to the National Security Council since that department is responsible for all anti-terrorism campaign[s]," said Mr. Mashal.
During the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan in 2001, thousands of alleged Taleban and al-Qaida combatants were taken captive.
The U.S. military transferred hundreds of men accused of being enemy combatants to a detention camp in Guantanamo Bay for questioning.
Around 400 Afghans are still reportedly at the base, part of a larger group of suspects being investigated for ties to international terrorist groups.
The return of the 17 prisoners comes less than a month after the United States said it would release 38 foreign nationals held in Cuba.
Afghanistan's chief justice, Fazl Hadi Shinwari, told reporters Tuesday his government had been pressing Washington for the men's release.
"We have been talking for quite some time with the United States… So these prisoners are released by U.S. government and also with negotiations of the government of Afghanistan," he said.
In January U.S. officials also freed 80 Afghan detainees held in military prisons in Afghanistan.
The move followed widespread accusations of abuse in those camps and was seen as an attempt to win over former Taleban supporters in Afghanistan.
Nevertheless, the fight against Taleban hard-liners has only intensified.
Fighting between coalition forces and suspected Taleban militants has picked up as warmer spring weather improves the rebels' mobility.
On Monday, 17 Taleban militants were reportedly killed during a joint U.S. and Afghan military operation in southern Zabul province.

Yoshi even though I agree that the Talban where too extreme in there views, you have no knowledge making such a comment you are not God so you cant decide that.

its easy to say such harsh comments sitting on our comfortable couches infront of our high-tech computer screens.
they, all praise be to Allah, wished to implement the islamic law, and did so while they were faced with all kinds of evils from 'outsiders'. the country is so very corrupt after the Northen Alliance and American troops came into the scene - there was so much peace and justice within the country while the taliban were leading it.
why is it that they arent being publicized now as they have been for so long? simply because now it is REAL war with the enemies (i.e. american/foreign troops) being killed, day in day out. the leader of taliban vowed to have strong attacks against the invaders come spring time, and praise be to Allah they have been successful in this battle so far. may Allah grant them success, allow us to have the courage of these brave warriors, and allow them to enter into our lives bringing with them, true Islam.

Yes it is easy to use our high-tech computer screens which is a US development. Incidently this site is also hosted in the US.

You use US technology and US freedom of speech to call the US Evil. Please post where in the former Taliban regime or indeed Iran one can start a forum hosted in these countries that call them evil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

u talk about freedom of speech? how often do you hear of muslims being attacked, terrorized, interrogated, or arrested due to them speaking out against the 'pro-zionist governments'? answer: every single day.
however, nothing whatsoever is done about when theres someone attacking islam, attacking a muslim, holding anti-muslim conversation - now thats freedom of speech. never has there been a case of a non-muslim being arrested/tortured by non-muslims for speaking out against muslims. if it did happen, that would be fairness. but it doesnt. so freedom of speech - isnt the best of conversations to get into, since theres no such thing. for muslims anyway. muslims are attacked - whenever the slightest of chances arrives. im not trying to give u some kind of sob story. my point is - you (root) may have freedom of speech, but realistically, muslims dont. if they did, they wouldnt be arrested, for saying lines such as 'israelis have no right to palestine' publicly. or 'kill the zionists'. if someone ranted 'kill the muslims' there wouldnt be no attacking going on, it wouldnt even be publicized.
