UK Muslims condemn govt silence over Israel’s war crimes

The British Muslim Community slammed the government, led by Prime Minister Tony Blair, for failing to stop Israel's ongoing onslaught against the Lebanese, which has so far claimed more than 200 innocent lives, IRNA reported Tuesday.

"Had these mass killings and the accompanying savage destruction of towns been carried out by a Muslim government, we do not think our government would have remained silent," said The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) Secretary General Muhammad Abdul Bari, expressing UK’s 1.8 million Muslims' anger over the "pathetic statements from the Security Council and the G8 leaders."

"By failing to condemn the Israeli actions under the pretext of 'self-defence' they have ipso facto given the Zionist fanatics more time to carry out their rape of Lebanon," Mr. Bari warned, adding that "there is absolutely no doubt that Israel's actions constitute war crimes".

The Muslim Council of Britain, an umbrella organisation uniting many national, regional, local and specialist organisations and institutions from different ethnic and sectarian backgrounds within UK Muslim Community, urged the British government and other contracting parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention to condemn these "outrageous breaches of international humanitarian law."

At least 10 civilians were killed today in a fresh wave of Israeli air raids that targeted civilian houses across Lebanon.

Israel claims that its daily raids, part of a military operation it started last week, only target the Lebanese resistance movement, Hezbollah’s bases, but correspondents, witnesses and the police affirm that the Israeli occupation forces target civilian areas.

The simple fact is that if the Israelis were targeting civilians there would be a lot more dead civilians than there have been so far. What are they are actually targetting is Hezbollah facilities and personalities located in those civilian areas.

Whether they should be doing that is, of course, a different question.

It is a different question and as bad as it is it must be done. If operating amongst civilians gives you immunity then the Israelis and US is screwed.

Hezbollah knows what they are doing in relation to civilian casualties. The more the better for propoganda purposes, so I'm sure we will see many more Hezbollah missile launchers on civilian structures.

Jbeil was raided by Israeli missiles yesterday, yet it a Christian city. I think Michel Aoun represent the city in prliament. How can Christians be Hezbollah supporters.

Who said they are?

The point is that the Israelis are not targetting a "Christian city", they are targetting Hezbollah (or suspected Hezbollah) targets within it. The presence of such targets does not require Hezbollah "support" from all the locals - although, of course there are a great many muslims (and I'm NOT saying all the local muslims support Hezbollah) in Jbeil, "Christian" city or not. Hezbollah is a large organisation with both political and military influence right across Lebanon.

I thought Hezballah's only turf is in Southern Lebanon and Southern Beirut.

Sunnis in West Beirut. Christians in North Lebanon and East Beirut. Druzes in the Lebnese-Syrian borders.

And why Israel killing Lebanese soldiers in Lebanese military camps too?

Its about time that the Muslim Council of Britain said something its a shame though we only hear of this on Al Jazeera its about time that the MCB looked at another approach to try and get the voices of Muslims accross to the Goverment as the Muslim Labour Policiticans dont want to upset the Boss and rather sit Stum in the House of Commons!

If you think Israel is only targeting Hezballah and not intentionally hitting civilians, you are blind. Its obvious they have no regard and show no mercy to the inocent of the Arab lands.

You have that exactly backwards - since the Arabs murder civilians, why shouldn't Israel do the same thing? Who started this? Now we can go back to Adam's birthday in the search for who "really" started it, but this recent round was started by an attack by Hezbollah on Israel.

And of course the other problem is that Hezbollah and Hamas cannot. Whether or not what they do is moral, if it is not going to work or is going to cause more damage to the Palestinians and Lebanese than it will to Israel, why do it?

Well would you like to support me in calling for both sides to stop strikes on *all* civilians? So Israel will no longer strike at Lebanese and Palestinian civilian targets, but the Palestinians will no longer strike at Israeli civilian targets? No more suicide bombs in cafes, no more attacks on schools, no more rockets on Sderot and Haifa. Sound fair?

Yet again, if Israel was targetting civilians there would be a lot more dead civilians. That doesn't mean that there aren't far to many already - one is too many.

Obviously this strategy is not working as they wished. A ground invasion may be a more efficient option.

I believe that in exactly the same way that I believe as long as young White skinheads feel they have got no hope but to beat young Asians to death we are never going to make progress.

They attacked Achrafieh, Christian quarter in East Beirut yesterday. Since when Christians became Hezballah?
