A Muslim gathering at the Indonesian Embassy in Brunei conducted Funeral Prayer For the Absent, or “Al Ghaeb” prayer for those who died in the powerful quake that struck off Java this week, triggering waves of tsunami, according to Borneo Bulletin.
At least 547 were killed by the tsunami that smashed into the heavily-populated south coast of Java, Indonesia's main island, on Monday.
Tens of thousands had been displaced by the quake and are now staying in temporary shelters. Aid workers are trying to provide the displaced with the needed care, but some refugees are complaining about cramped conditions and absence of basic needs, including extra tents.
"It is difficult to sleep, hot in the day and cold at night," said 20-year-old Roffi, whose house was destroyed by the huge waves.
The mass prayer, led by Ustaz Khairul Manan Hawafi, an Indonesian religious teacher at the Institute Tahfiz Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Jln Tutong, was also attended by Ambassador Mr. Herijanto Soeprapto, embassy staff, Indonesian expatriates and their families.
It was a show of solidarity with the quake survivors, victims and their families.
The ambassador expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives in the quake that arouse memories of the deadly tsunami that hit Aceh province in December 2004 and claimed the lives of over 26, 2004 people.
