Not to beg forgiveness for the mushrikïn

It is not proper for the Prophet and those who believe that they should beg forgiveness for the mushrikïn, even though they be their relatives, after it has been explained to them that they are the inmates of hellfire. Abraham prayed for his father’s forgiveness only to fulfill a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy of Allah he disassociated himself from him. The fact is that Abraham was tenderhearted, forbearing. It is not the way of Allah to confound people after He has guided them, until He makes clear to them what they should guard against; surely Allah has the knowledge of everything. Surely it is Allah to Whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He gives life and causes to die. You have none besides Allah to protect or to help.

It was just mentioned that you have to please your parents even if they're unjust in a different post. How do you discern if your parents are enemies of Allah or just lost souls?

I think its more of a matter of if they reject what you say to them, especially when you give clear proofs. At the same time, the ayah/verse is emphasising on the fact that you cant ask for their forgiveness, but you can pray for their guidance insha Allaah.

I think Fi_Sabilillah has clarified your misgiving. You have to obey your parents even if they are unjust or even mushrekins insofar as they do not prevent you from doing your duty to God.

If your parents are non-muslims, you still have to serve them.
So long as they do not ask your to do anything against islam, they are still your parents and you have to obey their commands.
As for asking forgiveness, the aayah quoted at the beginning of this thread makes it very clear that we are not allowed to ask forgiveness for the mushrikeen. The prophet (SAW) asked allah to forgive his mother and this ayah was revealed. The most he was allowed to do was to visit her grave.
