You can open them I've seen someone do it all it took was a bunch of conditioner and a rat tailed comb.
You wouldn't be able to make Ghusl with them
Women plait their hair and dont have to unloosen the hair to perform ghusl .
Hadith - Muslim, Narrated Umm Salamah
I said: Messenger of Allah, I am a woman who has closely plaited hair on my head; should I undo it for taking a bath, because of sexual intercourse? He (the Prophet ) said: No, it is enough for you to throw three handfuls of water on your head and then pour water over yourself, and you shall be purified.
for men you cant pray with plaited hair I dont know if this applies with dread as well though
Hadith - Muslim, Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas
Ibn Abbas saw Abdullah ibn al-Harith observing the prayer and (his hair) was plaited behind his head. He (Abdullah ibn Abbas) stood up and unfolded them. While going back (from the prayer) he met Ibn Abbas and said to him: why is it that you touched my head? He (Ibn Abbas) replied: (The man who observes prayer with plaited hair) is like one who prays with his hands tied behind
"Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why we call it 'The Present'."
I would say the dreadlocks aren't allowed just based on the fact that you can't wash them. Once you dread and lock your hair, you can't open it unless you cut it off. You wouldn't be able to make Ghusl with them.
And Allah knows best.
Dreadslocks are washable, in fact they have to be washed or theyd probably get all greasy which is not good for dreads. I have dreadlocks and wash them once or twice a week. The only thing unsanitary about them is that they can hold smells, so if youre in a place where theres lots of smoking theyd smell like smoke and would have to be washed that day, but Im never at such places. But they also hold the smell of shampoo, which is great. H&S for men smells quite nice.
ASALAM WRWB
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever has hair, let him take care of it.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4163; classed as hasan by al-Haafiz ibn Hajar in Fath al-Baari, 10/368.
Keeping long hair is the identity of a feminine but being muslims we must stay away from doing Zina or doin any show off.

Not positive, but isn't one of the signs of judgement day when men imitate women and women imitate men by their images or whatever? something like that XD
anyways, as they've said before, it's the intention of why you're getting ur hair long that matters. Just...don't get it too long, u'll look really.........feminine.
