Would you care to help my oldest daughter with her school project?

She has a few questions regarding how religion is practise in schools in different countries.

The questions she needs to know is:

In Muslim schools (in Muslim countries):

    * What country are you from?
    * Do you pray and read the Koran in school?
    * Is it a difference between private and public school?
    * Why is it important to practice religion at school and not only outside school?
    * Are there different regions at each school or are there different religions at different schools?

    If you living in USA:
    * Is there any differences in private schools that practice Islam regarding to how it is in Muslim countries?

    Thank you in advance!

Re: Would you care to help my oldest daughter with her school project?

    Hi there :thankyou:

What do you mean by Muslim countries?
I'm not sure but do you mean countries which have Muslims in it (for example I live in England and there are many Muslims here) or do you mean a country like Saudi Arabia?

Lets say you're talking about any country so I'll answer the questions for my situation. If not, ignore my post ( )

    * What country are you from?
    England, UK

    * Do you pray and read the Koran in school?
I went to a state school, that's to say a goverment school where there were girls and boys and of any faith.
And I never prayed the Qur'aan in school. However we did study the religion of Islaam in religious studies.
There is also an Islamic School where I live and there they do the same lessons as us but with a few differences for example in religious studies they only study Islaam.
But about studying the Qur'aan then I think you're talking about mosques?
If I'm right then basically where I live after school which finishes after 3, children go to mosque at about half 4 - quarter to 5 in the evening for about 2 and a half hours where they pray the Qur'aan and learn urdu (a language) and learn about different aspects about Islaam (eg prayers, cleanliness, fasting, pilgramage etc)

    * Is it a difference between private and public school?
I suppose there is depending on what the private school is, I mean we have a private Islamic Girls School which yes is different to the public school I went to but we also have other private schools where theres boys only and girls only but for all faiths.
Now I understand why you're asking about Muslim countries because I suppose theres would be different.
I know someone who used to live in Saudi Arabia and went to school there so I could ask them about it if you want.
Better then me wittering on about how schools are in England . You probably already know how its like here!

Re: Would you care to help my oldest daughter with her school project?

She meant a country with mostly Muslims living in it where Islam is the biggest religion. But she needed from UK also so it is really great so she can look at similarities and differences also.

Sorry for unclear formulations I was in a hurry when I wrote and thank you very much for your answer.

Re: Would you care to help my oldest daughter with her school project?

    Hello:sister:,
I am from an island called Sri Lanka, which was known as the pearl of the Indian Ocean decades ago and also where the foot Print of Adam is found at the peak of a mountain. (Adam’s Peak)

Sri Lanka is a multi ethnic and multi religious country consists of 69.3% Buddhist, 15.5% Hindus, 7.6% Christians and 7.5% Muslims. Generally it’s a practice here for all Muslims to pray and read the Holy Qur’an before they reach adulthood.

The Education system here is largely a national program for the country under a national syllabus for all state run and private schools. In the past two decades we can see the emergence of International Schools catering to the migrant population and to the affluent sectors in the society. The education system in such schools is not governed by the state. They follow the syllabus of EDEXCEL, CAMBRIDGE, Oxford and American Colleges.

The national curriculum caters to all religious denominations. Religion is taught in every school to be offered at the national level examinations. Here it can be categorized as Islamic studies, Islamic civilization and Arabic Language. Since the learning period in schools are time limited the society benefits from the number of Qur’an Madrasas and Ahadiyas (Sunday schools) run by area mosques that conduct classes for children of all ages in Arabic reading, writing and reading of the Holy Quran. Practicing religion in school is important because it is one of the compulsory subjects offered in the national curriculum and all children are taught to respect their religions from childhood. In Sri Lanka National education is Free.

Yes schools originate the religion from the source or base it was built on. The Christian missionary workers started schools centuries ago and these are Christian schools but according to the regulations they have to absorb in a percentage of students from other denominations and provide the facilities for educating their different faiths. It’s the same with how the Muslim, Buddhist or Hindu schools function.

On the whole Religious Knowledge and practices cannot be learnt totally during the entire school life. As the national curriculum on Islam is limited, Islamic scholars have created 100% private schools for Muslim boys and girls separately in the English medium to facilitate the expatriate Muslim community as well. These schools follow a general curriculum according to international standards yet they have a wide range of disciplines under the Islamic framework which, most affluent Muslims find it important and convenient in bringing up their children.

Feel free to ask any question

Re: Would you care to help my oldest daughter with her school project?

    * What country are you from?
im from egypt but was born and raised in america

    * Do you pray and read the Koran in school?
yes i happen to attend an islamic high school in new york and we learn all teh regular subjects along with 3 extra periods of koran, islamic studies, and arabic and we have a certain time in which teh school prays together

    * Is it a difference between private and public school?
yes of course...in my private school i can practice islam and b a muslim very comfortably and also in private school the teachers etc give u more attention regrading ur personal and educatin issues

    * Why is it important to practice religion at school and not only outside school?
well as muslims its important because i learn more about my religion and also get to pray with my school during praying times..for muslims ... i dont think its important that u practice relgion in school but it does make u feel better about urself...

    * Are there different regions at each school or are there different religions at different schools?
in public schools there are different relegions of course... most private schools are either catholic, jewish or muslims and in these schools 99.9% of teh studenrts belong to that relgion...

    If you living in USA:
    * Is there any differences in private schools that practice Islam regarding to how it is in Muslim countries?
well... in muslim countries teh public school dont teach much about islam...
regardign egypt as thats where im from public schools dont teach much about islam (only somethings) but thats because there are christians in the schools too
but wat i do noe is that there are schools and colleges that teach the normal subjects alogn with many classes regarding islam.....

Re: Would you care to help my oldest daughter with her school project?

    What country are you from?
    Im from England UK

    - Do you pray and read the Koran in school?
yes although i attend a mixed state school our school has provided us Muslims with 2 prayer rooms and seperate wudhu facilities for boyz n girlz so that we are able to pray our salaah. We also have jummah prayers on friday. our school has students from all different faiths and we are all allowed to follow our religion as we will. we also have regular talks and islamic events i.e. eid gathering
ps we also recite the quran

    - Is there a difference between private and public school?
In my area i would say NO, this is because in my school and many others we after fighting for our rights have been given the facilties required for salaah and jummah. we are also allowec to wear our islamic dress code, i.e. girls are allowec to wear their jilbabs and hijabs etc. This is the same in private schools, however, in public schools like the one i attend i believe we are given more opportunities

    - Why is it important to practice religion at school and not only outside school?
Because it is our duty as Muslims to practice Islam wherever we are. every single step we take and everything we say should be of a islamic nature. we shud try our best to implement the teachings of the Quran and sunnah in our daily lives. anyway being a Muslim is a permaneet duty not a temporary one where we only practice it in ceratin times and places.

    - Are there different regions at each school or are there different religions at different schools?
in public schools there are different relegions of course... most private schools are either catholic, jewish or muslims and in these schools 99.9% of the studenrts belong to that relgion... (agree with above)
