Masjid An Nur was opening at 27 Rajab 1388 H or coincide with the date of October 19, 1968. Inaugurated by Arifin Ahmad, Governor of Riau at the time and in 2000 during period of governor Djasit Saleh, masjid An Nur was renovated on a large scale.
From the renovation in year 2000 the mosque's land area tripled from the previous 4-hectare only to be 12.6 hectare.
In the history, the masjid An-Nur had been a campus of the Faculty of Islamic Theology State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Sultan Sharif Kasim Pekabaru at the beginning of its establishment until 1973. Masdjid An-Nur of Riau in Pekanbaru is called the Taj Mahal of Riau province. When we observe the mosque's architectural, An-Nur does have some similarities with the Taj Mahal. Mosque architecture was designed by Ir. Roseno with a size of 50 X 50 m, located in a yard which covers 400 X 200 m. The capacity of the mosque can accommodate about 4,500 worshipers. The mosque consists of three levels. The upper level is used for prayer, and a lower level for office and meeting space.
This mosque has three steps, 1 piece of stairs at the front and 2 on the side of the stairs. In the upper part consists of 13 pieces of the door and the bottom consists of 4 pieces of the door and have large rooms and a hall. While calligraphy contained in the room mosque is written by a calligrapher named Azhari Nur from Jakarta, written in 1970.
Downstairs is the secretariat of mosque officials, management, mosque's youth, and classroom space where the implementation of Islamic education. Masjid An-Nur of Riau also equipped with escalators connecting between floors one and two. In the courtyard of the Great Mosque of An-Nur Riau is a broad fieldMasjid An Nur also equipped with various facilities like education from playgroup, kindergarten, elementary, junior high and high school, a comprehensive library and facilities such as halls and meeting rooms, classrooms and office space.
