One thing I see happening in this thread is a very simple statement is being taken and run wild with.

There really is no need to explain why pork is forbidden to eat. All we need to know is that Allah has forbidden it. It really is not any of our concern as to why he has forbidden it.

Simple statement. Jews and Muslims abide by that rule. The Question was why don't Christians. We explained why we don't eat pork. Simple reason, we are told not to. Some Christians have answered why they believe it is now allowed.

my late/arwah grandfather use to eat it (he is sarawakian) and he knows about the toxin but he still eat it. The one who prepared the fish is my grandmother...

i do miss my grandfather (he was a great man).

At the risk of straying off topic, why eat meat at all?

Consider; over fifteen million children alone die each year of starvation. One in twelve of the worlds population is suffering from malnutrition, including 160 million children under five. Every 3.6 seconds somebody dies of hunger. Source

Now consider, one acre of land can produce 250lbs of beef or 40,000lbs of potatoes. To produce 1lb of beef you need 16lbs of edible grain and soybeans that could be used to feed the hungry. The percentage of protein wasted by cycling it through livestock is 90%. Source

Whichever religion you follow,the world population was a small fraction of what it is now, let alone with what it will be in fifty years time, compared with when your holy book was written or founder's teachings imparted.

Surely the question should be not why Christians eat pork, but why they, or muslims, eat meat at all. Whatever the Qur'an or Bible may say, what possible ethical defence is there for an unnecessary dietary habit that kills millions more each year than any military conflict?

Sorry, I'm late in responding, I just saw your post.

Yes, that's right. Copyists would oftentimes (both intentionally and unintentionally) include the marginal notes into the main body of the text. Translators would often include their explanation of a verse in brackets. In some cases they truly felt they were making things more clear. However, over the centuries and God only knows how many copies and translations, these also became part of the main body of the text.

Using brackets doesn't necessarily mean someone is trying to twist text. When translating there are many words from one language that can't be properly translated to another so it becomes necessary to use brackets to clarify. Like the word wali in arabic means one thing, but there is not just one word to explain it in English. So you will often see brackets next to it saying (friend, guardian), etc.

The problem arises when the bracketed explanations find their way into the main body. And, just because a verse is followed by a bracketed explanation, doesn't necessarily mean it is accurate as usually this is the opinion of the translator. Because the original manuscripts are not available, it's not possible to go back and look to see what was added, removed, explained, etc. And, as we all know, translations can never be exact. Especially when you're looking at translations of translations of translations.

That's also why, when we read the Qur'an in a different language than Arabic, the book is called, "The Translations and Meanings of the Holy Qur'an", and never claims to be an exact translation because that is impossible. Always, it is better if you can learn and understand Arabic. In English the most misunderstood verse is probably the one about not taking Christians and Jews as friends. However, the meaning is quite different when you read the Arabic verse. That's why there are not only translations, but explanations.

This Bob v. Junus discusion is so obviously contrived it is hard to believe that anyone, Muslim or not, would fall for it.

It is NOT dangerous to eat pork. More people in the world eat pork than do not eat pork. Those that eat pork DO NOT suffer, in any significant numbers, the so-called parasitic diseases that Muslims try and say they do suffer from. Muslims have got it wrong. They can't accept their false views on pork and hterefore clutch at straws.

T. spiralis and tinea solium,both from pigs the latter has absolutely horrible ramifications... I can't say I have seen it as an every day occurrence but I have seen it nonetheless.. still exists..yes modern day..... true other animals have worms some causing mild forms of anemia but I don't know if pigs are worth being blind over ? I guess it can be treated by praziquantel, for $800 a pill if you can afford it... as it is an orphan drug........... everything carries a risk with it... some risks are just not worth it in my book... for those who enjoy ham, and pork and pickled pork feet.. all the best no one here is trying to impose a dietary restriction... we Muslims don't eat it and don't have to scientifically justify it... it is a forbidden and that is good enough for most of us without long winded research... and worms didn't just exist in ancient Mesopotamia still very much with us modern day...

Pigs do not sweat, so they wallow in mud to cool their bodies. The mud also protects a pig from insect bites and from sunburn. Because they roll in mud, pigs often look mucky and people think that they are dirty animals. But pigs are clean animals! They will have a place which they use as a toilet which is well away from the places where they eat or drink.

i suggest u to think again before saying such a thing, i learnt about the ear mechanics but in hte end of the course my teacher said that this theory explain many thing but not everything and there might be someone in the future who will prove we are wrong...... and for many years ppl thought bekesy's theory was the best one to explain how the ear works and bekesy got the noble price for it but few years ago they found out its not very true...........
