Re: Why is pork forbidden?
Sometimes I wonder why there gets to be so much debate over why pork is forbidden. Us humans are funny creatures we keep looking for explanations. Can't we just accept the fact it is haram because Allah(swt) told us it is?
Now in our search we often come up with what appear to be valid explanations. One of the most common is Pork carries trichnosis. But, pigs are not the only animals that carry it. Any animal we use for meat is capable of carrying it with the exceptions of fowl and fish.
Another arguement that comes out is pigs are dirty, nasty, animals. But, anybody who has ever lived on a farm will tell you pigs are probably the cleanest farm animal. Unfortunatly, many people keep them in too small of confines a pig is primarily a vegetarian and needs to roam and graze over a large area for their calorie requirements, but in captivity farmers often force them to live in close confined quarters. We have some nasty farmers not necessarily nasty pigs.
Then we have the arguement that pigs will eat their own feces. That is true if they are not given sufficent food. But, the same also goes for goats, shepp, cows and horses. The most notorious animal for eating feces is chickens, that is their favorite food and they will eat it even when other food is plentiful.
Now, with all of that said. Let us just be content with the fact that
Allah(swt) has ordained it is forbidden.
For myself the rational arguement against eating it is obvious. A pig does not have a defined neck and it is impossible to slaughter one in the halal manner as we are to slaughter our meat. Even in my non-Islamic days the animal I most dreaded to slaughter was a pig. It is nearly impossible to slaughter one without inflicting much pain upon them and they are very intelligent and know when you are about to slaughter one. Pigs will also grieve for long periods over seeing a pig killed. The behaviors and intelligence of pigs is very similar to that of elephants, which are basicaly overgrown pigs in need of a nose job.
Another less obvious reason, pig protein and enzymes are virtualy identical to Human flesh. As a result it is much too enriched for our body to use properly and results in High Blood pressure and other over indulgence problems.
From testimony of cannabils in the past pig meat is indistuingishable from human flesh in appearance and taste. Throughout the world among people who practised cannabilism as a regular thing, the word for human meat and pork are the same word.
