Questions on Malaysia and Malaysians, answered by Malaysians.

Is it my imagination, but has Malaysia really bolted foreward in a recent jump at industrialization and how is this affecting the people?

In the 80s, when we learn about Malaysia's economy ... it was like Malaysia is the largest producer of rubber, tins, palm oil in the world, but just a decade after, Manufacturing became the main source of Malaysia's economy ... i think like 80% of the economy. In fact, many rubber and palm estates were destroyed to make way for factories. While the tin mining areas turned into recreational places. Supposingly, in 2020 Malaysia would be Industrial developed nation no longer a developing nation.

The people, Yes we change too much. Parents are encouraging their kids to learn IT, youngsters very keen on latest gadgets, westernisation is going VERY WELL....

Because all of these happen too fast ... that's why, especially among the Nationalists and Islamists there are lots of concerns about westernisation of the Malays. But I think the Non Muslims tolerate this changes.

Until now, 49 years after independence... Malaysians are asking that are we divided or united?.... it's a question hard to answer ... even by me.

While Malaysians can enjoy eating food of different cultures, having friends among other ethnic groups, but still there are lots of prejudice among us...

What is the school system like? Are there a lot of colleges and universities? Is it public or private? Anything else about the educational system.

While the Federal Constitution enshrines Islam as the official religion, Malaysia really inherited secular common laws from its British former colonial masters after having achieved independence in 1957. However, sharia laws only govern majorly the inheritance & matrimonial rights for Malay Muslims. Non-Muslims are still subject to civil laws.

Good explanation...

If you open the Federal Constitution ... there is no words such as 'Allah' or 'God' inside it... and Federal Constitution is THE HIGHEST LAW OF THE LAND... it's stated inside Fed. Consti.

When I was in Constitutional Law class, Islamists were saying that it's 'shirk' to say so

We have both public and private education systems.

1) Kindergarten period (4 - 6 yrs old) - it's optional, but majority of children were enrolled in kindergartens nationwide as early as 4 yrs old.

2) Primary School Period (7 - 12 yrs old) - it's obligatory. It's a crime if you dont send your kids to school. We started with Standard One (for 7 yrs old) and ended with Standard Six (12 yrs old). At the end of Standard Six we would be having a nationwide examination called UPSR. All of these kids mus sit for Malay Language, English Language, Science an Mathematics papers. It's important to score all subjects with 'A's if you want to further study in the best secondary schools.

3) Secondary School Period (13 - 17 years old) - it's also obligatory. It starts with Form 1 (for 13 years old) to Form 5 (17 yrs old).
In Form 3, there would be another nationwide exam called PMR. You have to score as many 'A's as possible to be maintained or further admitted to best secondary schools.

In Form 5, SPM (equivalent to UK's O-Level) IS THE ULTIMATE exam for Malaysian students ... it's the paper that could give you a place in the university or ended up working in factory.

4) Pre University Level - for those who excelled in the SPM, they'll go for pre university education such as Matriculation etc.... or they can stay at secondary schools taking STPM papers.

We have many type of public schools:

Primary Schools
1) Sekolah Kebangsaan (formerly known as Malay schools, Malay is used as medium of instructions)

2) Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan (now abolished and called as Sekolah Kebangsaan, formerly know as English school, English as medium of instructions)

3) Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (formerly known as Chinese school, Mandarin as medium of instructions)

4) Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (formerly known as Indian school, Tamil as medium of instruction)

Seconday Schools
1) Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (Malay as medium of instructions)

2) Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Cina (Mandarin as medium of instructions)

3) Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tamil (Tamil as medium of instructions)

4) Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (Islamic school)

5) Sekolah Menengah Sains (Science stream school)

6) Sekolah Menengah Teknik (Technical school)

7) Sekolah Menengah Vokasional (Vocational training school)

We have tens of universities and hundreds of colleges.

And we have to wear school uniforms at public schools:

Judging from what I read in our daily newspaper, it is clearer to me that the world (or at least my own country) is getting more and more dangerous each day. I don't know how I can be safe when even the police allow themselves to be used as 'mercenaries' to 'take care' one's 'misconduct', especially those who have links with the dominant political power.

politicians are "tutt....tutt..tuttt....." :grumbling

Ehemmmm..... racist!!!!!! :okay:

Actually, I'm a fan. Some Banglas at a petrol station actually helped me clean the windshield of my car after some bozos stuck some notes with strong glue. They have my utmost gratitude. But I've never said "Banglas!" in hateful tone nor do I have negative perception about them. I even have a Bangla friend working in the campus foodcourt where I always frequented. His previous Arab employer closed down his Mediterranean delicacies and he inherited the shoplot and now sells Nasi Kandaq which is my favorite during lunch.

Their appearance and dressing styles often amuse a Malaysian like me, but I think they are very hard-working people.
