From my experience it is the most vocal of all opposition parties in Malaysia. It even heads the opposition front. It constantly attacks the ruling party UMNO for unIslamic practices in government. 1997 was the darkest moment in Malaysian political history following Anwar Ibrahim's sacking, during which PAS rallied behind him and demonstrated for his release when he was arrested and jailed for trumped-up charges of sodomy and corruption. That's all I can sum up right now.

If you're interested about Islamist movement in Malaysia, maybe you can visit their harakahdaily homepage.

I am not a member of PAS, but I do read Harakah. It's the most liberal newspaper in Malaysia. I think it's the only newspaper that publish articles written by Israeli Jews. I think they support Naturei Kartei Jews too.

how do malaysians see their neighbor indonesia?

Almost all "Malays" in Malaysia have Indonesian ancestry. But from what I've seen, many "Malays" forgot about this.

The Indonesian guestworkers are treated as slaves by some Malays, and many Malays are not favourable to Indonesian citizens working here.

But, in the same time Malays appreciate Indonesia's music, movies and .. of course "sinetron" (Indonesian soap opera).

For me, Indonesians and other immigrants who live and work in Malaysia should be given "permanent resident" (PR) status after working more than 3 years in Malaysia, which they should have all rights like Malaysians have (including electing their representative to Malaysian parliament).

And when they got PR status for 3 years... they could be admitted as Malaysian citizens.

And it amuses me and horrifies me also they way when everytime an Indonesian person does something wrong in Malaysia, the Malaysians will automatically say " Well what else can you expect from those types of people!! Indonesians are scum..so you get scum from them"

Last night my brother was talking to my Aunt, and he told her that he wanted to go to Indonesia...immediately my Aunt freaked out and hit the roof , She was like " No!!!! Indonesia is full of orang jahat!!"

Typical racism

What I observed though, is that the way Indonesians are treated in Malaysia, is the same way the Somali's/Ethiopians get treated in Yemen. I observed some really perverted and narrowminded thinking of the Yemeni's towards them whilst I was there......

My friend (who is Bahamian) Went to Yemen last year....She told me whilst she was walking on the street this man touched her from behind. When she turned around he made a gesture to follow him into an alley. He assumed that she was Somali just because of her dark skin, and thus a prostitute!!! Well my friend sure dealt that man a good one.

I think there are many Kampung Jawa all over Malaysia, in Penang ... as I could remember... there are three Kampung Jawa's..

Penang has Lebuh Acheh (Achinese Street), Lebuh Armenia (Armenian Street), Jalan Yahudi (Jewish Road), Jalan Burmah (Burmese Road), Lorong Bangkok (Bangkok Lane), Jalan Scotland (Scotland Road), Kampung Benggali (Bengali village), Jalan Pattani (Pattani Road), Lebuh Chulia (Indian Muslim Street), Pantai Acheh (Achinese Beach), Batu Feringghi (Portuguese Rock), Kampung Jawa (Javanese Village), Kampung Melayu (Malay Village)

Malaysian "Malays" are actually mixed people of various ethnic groups, lots of chinese looks like Malays too. The least intermarriage between ethnic groups are Indians.
