In my search for Talmudic references to the tumtum (an intersexed person), I came across a web site, "Come and See," that published significant parts of the Soncino Press's English translation of the Talmud. When I first found it I was grateful to be able to get fairly complete quotations (rather than the brief mentions from the other articles on the web--see previous entry). Then I delved a bit deeper to find out whether the Soncino Press had given permission to put their translation on line. I discovered through reading the page on copyright issues that Come and Hear had taken the Talmudic texts from a book called The Plot Against Christianity by Elizabeth Dilling, which apparently had published hundreds of pages from the Soncino Press edition. The Plot Against Christianity appears to be an anti-semitic screed containing many classic anti-Jewish tropes.

Elizabeth Dilling's book was published by Noontide Books, which has published David Duke's autobiography, My Awakening: A Path to Racial Understanding. David Duke is a former Ku Klux Klan leader who has attempted to make white supremacy and anti-semitism respectable.

The Come and Hear web site, aside from its on-line Talmudic publication, has many essays written by the web site owner, Carol A. Valentine, and others, under the heading of EDITED LINK America under the Talmud. From the examination of one essay, EDITED LINKHoly Atrocities and Judaism, it appears that the author examines the Talmud and other Jewish writings through a hostile, anti-semitic lens designed to see the worst in anything Jewish. Her primary worry seems to be that the United States is quickly becoming a nation governed by Talmudic law.

The author, Carol A. Valentine, owns another web site called Public Action, Inc.. One of the key topics on the web site is Waco and the Branch Davidians, an issue that galvanized the extreme right in this country in the 1990s. There are also articles by her and others that claim that the September 11 attacks were carried by NORAD (North American Aerospace Defence Command), remotely controlling the planes. The site also contains a listing of Holocaust Revisionist web sites.

When I started my research on the Come and Hear site, I thought I had found something very useful -- a web site that offered search capabilities for a significant part of the English translation of the Babylonian Talmud. Upon discovering, however, that the web publication of the Soncino Talmud translation was certainly not authorized by the Soncino Press, and in addition that the web master who put up this site uses it to attack Jews and Judaism, this web publication seems to me to be very much like the free or for-sale term paper sites -- it purports to present legitimately publicly available information in an easy-to-access form, but actually perpetrates a malicious fraud.

I almost lost my courage to ask about Judaism. Only wanted to share the info that from this Jewish site , i found the same verse about which i asked the quesion.

Babylonian Talmud: Tractate Sanhedrin
Sanhedrin 55b

A Rabbi is giving here a ' fatwa' that is similar to that one i found in the site ' A Jew speaks out'.

Now, i wonder , just for asking if there is such a command/verse in Talmud , why u people got mad & scolded me? If marriage of a 3 years old girl is not permitted in a normal situation but it's an exception , u could simply explained to me that.

I did not write this post to hurt u . It's hard to find any command from Talmud as it's huge ; so i thought this thread could help me to know. But , as a said , i almost lost my courage to ask.

come and hear. com is a site that is run by anti-semites who have changed verses and distort facts!

this site was published by the same company that publishes david duke a well known anti-semite and white supremist.

Are females allowed to touch the tanak? (sorry if its spelt wrong) and/or are they allowed within the places of worship? I've heard lots of rumours.. not too sure.

yes females may touch and study torah and tanakh.

you got that from an anti-semetic site which lies. this site enocurages holocaust denial, world wide jewish consiracy, and white supremists.

read this:

Talmud Kidushin 41a goes on to teach

"It is forbidden for a man to betroth his daughter while she is young [but rather he should wait] till she has grown and says 'This is the one I want."

Great another anti-jewish smear site as a source.

:rollseyes

Makes me sad to see how many are out there. I mean what do we do to them? The publisher of this website is connected with anti-jewish and white supremist literiture, and hundreds of mistranslations which they simply edit are found.

Terrible source for someone unknowingly to read and think of as true.

from this Jewish site

If that is a Jewish site, then this is an islamic site:

EDITED THE LINK ANTI ISLAMIC WEBSITE

(A hate site like the many posted here) :(

i just want to apologize publicly - earlier i posted a link to a website for talmud translation and only later did i find out that it is an anti-jewish site.
this is a good illustration of what happens sometimes when you "google" something - it is not always obvious that the site has a bias.

Hello!

Is it true that Jewish men/women may not shake the hands of the opposite gender?

Thanks.

Just wondering, what does Deuteronomy 34:10-11 say according to the Jewish Sources?

Should a jew man compulsoriy have beard and wear a cap?????

Salaam/peace ;

......

want to clarify...... i don't live in the west. I live in a Muslim majority country where there is no Jew or white people.

It's not possible for me to understand by seeing a site that if the owners are white supremists or holocuast denials etc, etc.

This thread could be a wonderful oppornutiny for people like me who don't have any chance to meet any Jew personally. I see Jews only on tv screen when there is a news on Isreal/Palestine.

Anyway , sorry again if i hurt anyone's feelings

Can a Jew recite Gospel or the Koran in the public?

i am not sure, but i doubt it, since one encourages the worship of a human, and the other claims the Torah is corrupted. i'm not positive it it is specifically against jewish law however.

Is it true that Jewish men/women may not shake the hands of the opposite gender?

yes, under traditional judaism this is true.

it is alright, i completly understand. i live in a country where i never see muslims so i have a tough time understanding your point of view and encourage all to correct me when i make a misconception or i generalize.

Is it true that Jews are cheap in terms up giving up money?

jews are no more cheap then muslims are, or others are, this is just a stereotype used to try and dehumanize the jews by people like hitler who hated judaism. jews in america and around the world have given billions in humanitarian effotrs and charities. currently jewish organizations are giving billion of dollars to darfur to save muslims from being killed. does this sound like being cheap to you?

Should a jew man compulsoriy have beard and wear a cap?????

yes, a head covering is always needed especially when praying, and a beard well many jews do not have a beard, but traditional judaism requires you to grow a beard. i have a beard and always have a head covering.

Just wondering, what does Deuteronomy 34:10-11 say according to the Jewish Sources?

"And there was no other prophet who arose in Israel like Moses, whom the L-rd knew face to face, as manifested by all the signs and wonders, which the L-rd had sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and all his servants, and to all his land"
Deuteronomy (34:10, & 34:11)

If you wish I can give you the commentary on this verse by Rashi and some others that I have here on my bookshelf.

it is fine, some of these sites are very hard to find that they are anti-jewish.

Feel free to give some commentry, would be interesting, so Jews believe that Moses, peace be upon him, wrote the above passage?

B"H

Well you could say Moshe "wrote" them, but we believe the Torah is G-d's word, therefore, G-d really wrote it. Moshe transcribed it, or copied down what G-d told him.

The Talmud says that the last eight verses in the Torah, which relate Moshe's death, were written by Moshe at G-d's dictation, and Moshe cried as he wrote them (Bava Basra 15a). A chassidic master suggested that Moshe was not crying because he was writing about his own death, but because G-d dictated:
"And there was no other prophet who arose in Israel like Moses, whom the L-rd knew face to face,''
(Deuteronomy 34:10)
It gave Moshe great pain to write this adulation about himself. It is quite simple to efface oneself before a great scholar. The greatness of Moshe's humility was that he effaced himself before the lowliest person:
''Moses was exceedingly humble, more than any person on the face of the earth.''
(Numbers 12:3)
Therefore, one can come to two conclusions. First that Moshe cried upon having to write about his own death. Second that Moshe cried because of the huge compliment bestowed upon him, being the most humble of anyone on this entire earth.

Feel free to give some commentry, would be interesting,

The commentary on this by Rashi is on the words: "whom the L-rd knew face to face" Rashi writes: For he was quite familiar with Him, speaking with Him at any time he wished, as it is said, “So now I will go up to the L-rd” (Exod. 32:30), and, “You stand still, and I will listen to what the L-rd will command concerning you” (Num. 9:8).

Another commentary which is on "And there was no other prophet who arose" says: The verse contrasts Joshua to Moshe: Although Joshua suceeded Moshe, neither he nor any subsequent prophet was Moshe's equal.

Basically, this verse states that Joshua nor any other prophet in all of Am Yisroel (the nation of israel) would rise up and equal Moshe after his death. Moshe was the greatest prophet of all time, and the Torah ends on the fact that Joshua nor anyone else who would arise to take Moshe's place after he dies, will be as great as Moshe was.

From what I understand, it is forbidden to draw pictures of human beings and animals (just like in Islam)? If I am correct, what are the different opinions about photographies etcetera?

Exodus 20:4 says: "You shall not make for yourself a graven image or any likeness which is in the heavens above, which is on the earth below, or which is in the water beneath the earth."

I am not sure if Judaism has any problem with photogrpahy, as long as it is not made to be an idol or an idol like photo ect.

I will look into it.

Okay, thanks. I saw that the askmoses.com website has drawn pictures of the various scholars. Wouldn't this be going against that particular law?

Not really, unless they intend to worship the scholars, which I seriously doubt they do. :) The law does not restrict all photo's ect, but ones that could be or are worshiped. If that picture was being worshiped and they found out, then they would have to take down the picture and destroy it or something like that.

Oh, I understand.
I thought that hand-drawn images were forbidden in general, as it is in Islam (except that some scholars say it's allowed for children such as toys and images for children's books, based on a hadith).
