Amar sylhety bujhte koshto hoi... kintu amar monehoi ami bhaloi bekkha korte parchi. Thik na?

I find it difficult to understand Sylhet, but I think that I'm ok with it so far...am I right?

Chuto bela ami shuddho kotha bolchi, shekane ashe, ami Sylheti kotha bolte, ar shuddho bolte pari na :(

Chuto bela ami shuddho kotha bolchi, - I spoke shuddho when I was young

shekane ashe - come there (?!) (If you're trying to say "after that", say 'tar por')

ami Sylheti kotha bolte, ar shuddho bolte pari na - I speak/spoke sylheti. Can't speak shuddho anymore.

Are you originally from sylhet?
 
Sylhet district, but fam in BD originally used to speak Shuddho as a matter of politeness or something. Thing is, where I'm from now 95% of the locals are Sylheti, so we go with the flow..plus my dad's Sylheti, it was my mum that used to speak Shuddho...

^I see. I always thought that if you're sylheti, you speak sylheti regardless of where you are. Hmmm.

I was wondering... do any of you know any bengali poetry? Any famous bengali poets?
 
Well, I guess my fam are weird then. The majority of my relatives on my mum's side speak Shuddho, the majority of my dad's family speak Sylheti, though there are some random people that speak Shuddho coz they were educated there.
And mum's side speak Shuddho, coz for a while they lived in Dhaka, but had to move to another city when the Bangladeshi's were being killed in the dead of the night. Also, my nana was a policeman. So they were the first targets.
Apart from Robindro Nat Tagore (However you spell it) and Kazi Nazrul Islam,
I confess I don't remember the names of other poets, I just remember random phrases of poetry..
Seeing as you're not going to give the next word/ phrase whatever
'Amader choto nodi chole bake bake....' (lol, I remember the good ol' days!)
 
Musaafirah... Haha, that's one of the ones I was made to memorise when I was young. Including 'hat ti matim tim', 'chol chol chol' and other ones I forgot.

Do you guys know how to read bengali? Write it? How about the national anthem? Do you know that?
 
its weird when i was in bangladesh i learned to read it, pretty fluently,

then i came back to london n forgot most of wat i learnt :S

I can't read or write in bengali......i can just about speak and understand the language! lol
I was good when i was a kid.....but i forgot everything now!
 
I can read bangla and write (Had to do Bangla GCSE! :muddlehea)
As for the anthem: 'Amar shonar bangla, ami tumai Bhalobasheeeeeeeeeeeeeee....' lol
Right, are we to now exchange random poetry?

Really? I had to go and pick up bengali when I went back to Bangladesh. Bangla Literature is pretty hard. Harder than English Literature. Even though Bangla was my first language.

Not really. I was just wondering how much/to what extent you guys knew bengali. That's all. In my past three years after moving from the last town (in the UK), I've only seen Bengali people about 4/5 times. So I don't really know how my kind are.

Leave the onomatopoeia as they are.

Seriously, there are some real good Bangla literature out there. Thing is, I didn't quite appreciate the language as I had to study it. I know GSCE Bangla ain't all that, but my tutor insisted that I read around the topic and got me to write essays on the history of Bangladesh in English, then to translate it to bangla, :muddlehea.
Thing is, she was the type that was really really proud of being Bangla and all, quite a patriot :X

You make it sound like we're aliens! lol. Where I live currently (in reference to the area, not city, there is one Bengali family per road, average. In the different areas there is quite a cluster of a few families per road and we have
Bangla classes and all...
