Hair thinning in women

:salamext:

Pretty good advice by many. What i would say is .....

1st of all, wearing hijab doesnot thins the hair. I can assure that.
There can be many other reasons for thinning of hair like improper diet,
dandruff or other scalp problems. What i would suggest is if u have a good diet, then you should see a dermatologist. As they can tell you what medicated shampoos you should use and treat your problem.

She's 19 and her hair is quite thin on top.

Can she grow her hair thick again?

Salam,

Best advise is that the sister should see a dermatoligist (is that how you spell it?). Sometimes hair loss is hormonal and is reversible, other times it's not. Only a doctor can know for sure.

Tips: Tell this sister to avoid using hair gels or other styling creams, etc. and when she wears her hijab, to give some breathing room for her scalp. Some sisters where a tight cap under the hijab - not always the best thing for the scalp I think. She should make sure all her hair is covered obviously, but just make sure it's not too tight on the scalp.

Either way, she shouldn't feel bad about it. This is life. Things could be a lot worse. Always remember this.

Best of luck to her! :)

Salam.

Dermatologist is a doctor for the skin.

Tricologist is a doctor/specialist for hair. Try seeing one of those if all else fails. They have treatments which can help.

salamualikum.
my own hair dresser said to me buy the cheapest shampoo && it has less of that white thing you have around edges of windows, sinks etc etc. Do you all know in every shampoo it contains that white thingy bob (forgot name) && as that white thingy is water proof not much water can abosorb so for like few days your hair look nice && shiny etc etc but not worth it they turn dull after few days so best thing to use is cheapest shampoo, also i suggest she needs an hair dresser.

Well in any case my reason would be the hijab. The kind of fabric I wore. My hair was perfectly fine and very thick before I started Hijab. The hijabs i bought were from the Masjid one time after Eid, when they had stalls up. The only fabric that suits me is cotton. The silky kind didnt suit my hair...slowly my hair got less...
So now im sticking with cotton and taking care of my hair...
InshaAllah it should be fine.

ermm has anyone mentioned zinc deficiency? Also could be to blame is a high salt intake. B vitamins are important for hair growth as is iron. Vitamin C helps absorb iron, so it's good to take together. Vitamin E is good for your hair too.

Hair is mostly made of protien, so make sure you're getting enough. Drink plenty of water and eats lots of green leafy vegetables.

Avoid synthetic hair brushes/combs, hair sprays, gels, and use a brush made of natural fibre, wood or metal.

Do not comb hair when wet. This stretches and snaps hair off.

Do not towel dry roughly. And do not pull into tight styles - this weakens the roots causing hair to fall out.

Lastly do not stress.

I vaguely remember reading a long time ago, that nylon/synthetic brushes are bad for hair. Reason? They produce static electricity. The same happens with man-made fibres such as nylon etc. Imagine the constant friction.. makes your scalp tingle lol. So I really do believe it contributes to hair loss. Cotton is best! :)

hope your hair grows back :embarrass

AM confused so you guys are saying if a guy gets braids and the hair is pulled tight it will actually damage his hair?

alhumdulillah, here, there's islamic clothing shops popping up everywhere so we're in a good supply of cotton scarves. I'll get their website address. Then you can order some to your hearts content. :p

I could go to the city but...never have time :( And its 2 hrs away =\
I'd actually have to check around a lot of Desi/Muslim shops. I dont care if its a hijab or not. As long as its cotton, ill make one myself :D

I have read some of the replies here and I can't think of a worst thing that attributing hair loss to Hijab.

Your friend needs to a see a doctor ASAP-- for several reasons which I am going to list.
You say she is thinning on top which sounds to me like male pattern hair loss (usually due to androgenic) causes... she needs to have a hormone panel checked, since hair loss with one of these problems would be the least of her worries.
One of the first things that come to mind is polycystic ovary disease.
There is also pre-mature ovarian failure, there is Telogen effluvium: when all hair follicales go into arrest at the same time, but in fact they grow back again in this particular condition. I don't believe that is what she has
Trichotillomania, a term used to describe people who are in the habit of pulling and twisting their own hair.
other Hormone problems. like hypothyroidism or problems with nutrition also can result in unhealthy hair that falls out or breaks easily.
there are also other forms of hair loss called Alopecia Areata, hair loss in small patches, Alopecia Totalis: more than 50% hair loss on the scalp. and alopecia universalis which is all hair is gone... every where...
there is also hair loss that is caused by a type of fungus and the longer she waits chances are hair will never grow back... There are many other causes which I haven't mentioned here because I am in a hurry however, if you want to give your friend excellent advise, you won't find it in cyber section but take her by the hand to the doctor's office, it is best to treat the underlying cause of the problem than speculating on what caused it...
waslaam

^^But mine can be attributed to the Hijab. But only certain types of fabric IN Hijabs. My hair was fine before i started wearing the cheap fabrics....
No one told me which one i should wear..and its what they had at the masjid..:X
So yea i learned the hard way. Cotton all the way :thumbs_up lol.
Its getting better already actually :D

I've been told that her hair is strong, it is thin and does grow back. Her hair used to be very thick that you couldn't bunch it into a pony tail, as a kid, and now it is "thin" like normal women. Apparently if hair is tied back in a certain way, for women, your hair can look thin on top?

one of my friends had the same problem and hair thinning in young women isn't caused by the hijab at all. After series of tests, the doctor discovered that the problem was caused by a slight imbalance in the hormones. This isn't shocking because our hormones change during the teen years and cause some problems such as acne and such. The doctor recommened Womens Rogaine; tell her to talk to her doctor and see if it's caused by hormone imbalance and if Women Rogaine will help.
